Ideas worth examining: Theoretical and Actual Violence | Truth and Tolerance

Not everyone gets why I actually like D.P. Monahan despite our differing views, but this may help explain it:

“Rhetoric about the deep failings of America appeals to our Puritan appreciation for self-loathing while it lets us conveniently scapegoat our ideological enemies, and if you are a politician that is the important thing. Reducing actual crime rates with proactive policing (not to mention filling out the damn paperwork) well, that takes real work.”

    • A meerkat with a plan! I like it. It’s the story of my life. What do I have to do?

It’s basically a group of people from different backgrounds that respect the sanctity of life. The idea is to foster understanding, civil discussion, and proof that we as a species that we are greater than the sum of our parts. All I ask of those who join is to uphold these ideas, in whatever manner they see fit (be it silly, serious, witty or clever).

I get it now. You like him because he can be wrong no matter what.

I get a kick out of me too.
The self-loathing style of American rhetoric is of course dishonest: commentators say things like “We are a deeply racist country” but what they really mean is “You people (whom I’ve never really met) are a bunch of racists”.
They say that way of speaking started with the Kennedy assassination: “We (i.e. YOU) are a deeply flawed nation unworthy of such a President”. There was also a corresponding flight from reality, treating Kennedy as a martyr for civil rights when in reality he was shot by what we would now call a “self-radicalized homegrown terrorist” of the communist persuasion. They ignored the actual perpetrator of violence and instead focused on a vague theoretical violence.
