The Redemptive Power of Beautiful Things

A more light-hearted post since whenever one turns on the television all we hear are terrible things – so I give you some beautiful things:

I found this great little console d’applique (that just means it’s a console that hangs from the wall) in iron for the landing upstairs. It’s from the 1940’s and goes beautifully with the staircase. We got it for a fantastic price on Selency which is sort of like eBay was in the old days, with mostly vintage and antique items for the home. Without the large Madonna that went to live in California the space felt empty, so I decided to move things around. A bronze bust that was in storage has come out to join us; it’s by a Latin American artist.

I also got some very fun, borderline kitsch, 1970’s crystal wine goblets. Every day I use a different colour. Mike was also using them but he lost his crystal-use privileges for behaving carelessly.

On the work side of things, it’s been an amusing time. An exceptional 19th century painting is here for a little while. It’s titled Time Defeated by Beauty, Love and Hope, follower of Simon Vouet. The original is in the Prado and was painted in 1627. Our version is magnificently painted but much later. I’ve nicknamed it Killing Time.

Also in work this month: a glorious hardstone miniature with ruby eyes, probably from Idar-Oberstein, in the manner of Fabergé. Those who know me know I have a weak spot for Fabergé animals. We’ve been lucky enough to handle (the purchase then sale of) three over the years. The fox was the rarest, also a chick and a cat. Unfortunately none of the really spectacular pieces (yet!) like this griffon or this kangaroo. If I were wealthy, I’d collect them.

And, of course, let’s not forget the religious pieces which are my specialty. This month I’ll be selling a piece coming from Southern Spain, having belonged to a fraternal order in Malaga. An Our Lady of Carmen (Mt. Carmel), with period velvet vestments embroidered in gold thread and sterling silver crown. Btw, I’ve done business recently with the Ares gallery in Madrid, if you happen to be interested in very high end religious art, they have a truly exceptional selection.

Ares Anticuarios, Madrid

Finally, also in the good news area, our niece in Bristol (UK) is buying her first home. She’s saved for a good deposit, so we decided to give her a little financial push which she can either add to her deposit or use to furnish the place. Rent isn’t cheap in those parts, so putting money towards a mortgage is better for her in the long run.

Otherwise, all is well. We remain mostly confined, shopping once per week. Maya is making good progress, slow and steady. Her favourite part of the day is walk time by the river. At home her favourite spot is still next to Mike on the red sofa.

Mine too! She’s an amazing creature. She’s teaching me more about myself than I learnt in all the years before her arrival. And finally she and Morgan have started to really bond, which is fantastic.

Oooo I love all the stuff in this post. I especially like the shelf, the bunny, and those gorgeous crystal goblets…..funny Mike has been banned for careless goblet use. And that crown – must be a pain to keep it from tarnishing.

We’re thrilled with the shelf. It’s a difficult spot to place something because coming up the stairs one sees the underside of it, so it has to look good from below. Having tried a number of things, this was the first one that really worked.
The crown is EXHAUSTING!!!! I was probably the first person to clean it in many decades and it was jet black. I spent a good two hours with a little toothbrush and polish to make it moderately presentable again 🙂

I think I’d lock that crown into a corrosion free vault!🙂

You have done wonders with Maya…you have many beautiful objects, but for me the change in her outshines the lot.
Not that I would object to housing and enjoying said beautiful objects, though…

I can’t tell you how often things come through for work that I’d love to keep, but I have to be disciplined 🙂
Maya is a lesson in every possible way. She has no intention of giving up the independence she had in the wild, so we’ve had to learn to work around it.

A lifestyle a world a way from my own. Lovely to see beautiful things and the aesthetic to present them in their best light. I don’t know how I’d react were I to live in such a cultivated environment. I rather think of my own abode as a self-made prison cell, three hots and a cot… And a computer as my window into the outside world.

    Griffon? That’s no griffon… This is a griffon/griffin:

Love the console d’applique, but it was your comment about Mike and the crystal goblets that made me laugh out loud. Poor Mike. Tell him we commiserate. 😉

Glad to hear that you’re all well and staying that way. -hugs-

I gave him the option of being more gentle, he refused!
The console is great because it furnishes the space without making the passage look smaller, which is exactly what I wanted 🙂

Yeah, the console looks as if it was made for that spot. So Mike…did he actually break one???

No, he didn’t break them but he puts them down on the table unnecessarily forcefully.

lmao – you’re the Crystal Police! That said, I’m so glad you use your beautiful things. My Mum collected some lovely pieces too but they never came out of the ‘crystal cabinet’. Now that they’re mine, we use them and love them. 🙂

I’m social distancing, which is perfect for me. Although slightly disappointed I’m not being paid royalties by the whole world since I invented the concept.

Thank you! Mustering the focus to do it is incredibly difficult. Most of the time inside my head it’s like there are 10 loud televisions on different channels throwing information at me, so to tune all that out to write takes a huge effort 🙂

Beautiful things!! My godmother had crystal glasses just like yours, I think hers came from Bohemia – they had a wonderful sound to them!

I believe you’re right, the style of cutting is typically Bohemian. I think the original design was created by Nachtmann in Bavaria and called Traube, and that was then reproduced by smaller makers.

    Dear Pink,

Re “If I were wealthy, I’d collect them.” A favorite quote of mine was from a custodian at one of the colleges I worked at.” We like to chat a bit (more than a bit) and one time we were discussing our means and he said, quite earnestly: “Oh, I am rich already; I just don’t have the money yet.”

You my friend are wealthy, wealthy in home, wealthy in home town, wealthy in loved ones, wealthy in friends … you are just not so wealthy you can afford a ridiculously expensive hobby. (I can’t imagine collecting Faberge anythings; I can barely afford to spell the word.)

And I consider you one of my rich friends. (I like friends who are rich in good taste, rich in wisdom, rich in good advice, etc. The money … is optional.)

I know you’re right! I can’t complain, life is comfortable 🙂 But I wouldn’t turn down a coffee table with, let’s say, 20 to 25 little Faberge miniatures laid out in symmetrical rows!!!
