In a video posted Monday online, a group of people calling themselves “America’s Frontline Doctors” and wearing white medical coats spoke against the backdrop of the Supreme Court in Washington, sharing misleading claims about the virus, including that hydroxychloroquine was an effective coronavirus treatment and that masks did not slow the spread of the virus.
via Misleading Coronavirus Video, Pushed by the Trumps, Spreads Online – The New York Times
And this video was (dangerously and irresponsibly) shared far and wide. Like others in the same vein it has reached millions of people around the world. As with most conspiracy theories, a good way of testing their plausibility is considering what underlying facts must be in evidence for the theory to be true.
First let’s lay out the most salient points.
Who are we talking about: Dr. Stella Immanuel, a Cameroonian doctor who qualified in Nigeria. She also doubles as the pastor and owner of Fire Power Ministries in Texas.
Immanuel claims masks do not stop the spread of the virus. Here’s a link to detailed information from Stanford Medical School explaining the role of masks in preventing the spread of this type of disease. If you’re interested in the history of mask use in medicine there’s a very interesting piece in The Lancet by Bruno Strasser and Thomas Schlich.
The Doctor/Pastor also claims hydroxychloroquine is a miracle cure for Covid-19 and that she’s treated hundreds of patients with it. The problem is this is a drug which has been tested around the world with its results scrutinised by doctors and academics. The vast majority came to the conclusion it did not have substantive curative properties. Now what underlying facts must be in place for her claim to be true? Hyrdoxychloroquine was administered in France (promoted by Dr. Raoult), Italy, Spain, China (and others). In none of the trials was there a significant success rate. So for Immanuel’s claim to be true, we’d have to believe all the doctors who administered the drug around the world have come together in a conspiracy to actively hide evidence of their success. To do this they had to count on the collaboration of nurses, hospital employees and of the patients themselves. That’s just one of the more absurd facts that would have to be in place for her theory to be true, but there are many more. Which ones can you spot?
Just when I think I can’t become any more disillusioned, something like this comes along, and I find myself hating a good part of the human race. This is evil, and I don’t use that word often. 😦

Well, alien DNA being mixed with human DNA MIGHT explain Trump supporters as their thought processes are truly alien to positive, healthy human interaction. 🙂 I kid. What a loon this woman is! And, sadly, there are blithering idiots out there who will take all she says as fact because they SO desperately WANT it to be true. This type of conspiracy nonsense, especially in regards to covid, will result in thousands, if not more, deaths. The Trumps pushing this shit truly indicates the degree of just how irresponsible and, for lack of a better term, evil they truly are. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It is truly a stunning bit of dangerous idiocy on display.

Is this the video that both Donald and Donald Jr. posted? It’s terrible to wish ill on people but I so wish their remaining supporters will watch and believe it. Let’s throw in Mitch McConnell’s supporters, while we’re at it. All I’m hoping for is a little bug, just enough to keep them from voting. Is that asking for too much? Is it too cruel? No, I don’t think so, not if it saves America.
It was a good place to grow up. I don’t know what happened.

Costa Rica was using hydroxychloroquine in conjunction with an anti viral and zinc until the WHO banned its use…they were happy with the results on cases caught early. They are now almost ready to use a plasma treatment which indicates that they are not too happy about whatever treatment succeeded the WHO ban though whether on health or financial grounds is impossible to discover.
I was very bothered about the validity of the Recovery trial in Oxford as reported in Le Soir. too.
However, a bunch of people stirring up an emotional response, feeding on a need for reassurance is just beyond the pale – whatever they are promoting.

All the trials certainly need to be carried out, but it appears the trouble with the small French trial was that the numbers matched the placebo in parallel trials almost exactly. Le Soir does seem to be on the side of Raoult’s theories, but I think if the results were as clear cut and promising as some have said, we’d see them being reproduced to a more substantial degree elsewhere.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I’m more worried by Le Soir’s claims that while Recovery trials were said to be copying those of Raoult, in fact they were not, in being carried out on patients much further along the infection route and without the additional items.
If so, this is a waste of professional time, and, possibly, patients’ lives.
I am not into conspiracy theories, but as someone whose husband is at a very high risk due to his illnesses and as someone trained to sift evidence I would have more confidence in likely outcomes were I confident that proper trial procedures were being used.

We’re in the same boat. Mike is also in the high risk group which makes me anxious often. It seems the one thing we can count on is N95 masks and social distancing, which is why encouraging the public to do it is so very very important.

We’re used to shutting ourelves away, thank goodness as any bug can have dire consequences, but have to be careful about our employee – masked and keeping distance when he comes up to the house. Luckily he is taking his own precautions and is sensible. I used to shop and go to the bank at the hours set aside for the aged but it is counter productive as the queues are immense, so now go out at lunchtime, duly masked and ready to repel boarders.

We had eased our lockdown last week and I even went wine shopping, but with the numbers going up again (today the highest French numbers in a while) we decided to get back to near total confinement with just one shopping trip per week

I had to go to San Jose for bread and carcasses for the dogs but by calling ahead the poultry chap had the carcasses ready for me and brought them to the car so I did not have to go into the Central Market. Infuriatingly I need to replace some heavy kitchen gear and can only buy online as they are regarded as non essential items…but I need to see what I am buying. Apart from that it is a once a week outing to shop….

unsurprisingly DP Monahan seems to be wanting to tar real doctors with the same brush that should only be used on liars. It’s also unsurprising that DP runs away when asked about demons and spirits. That he apparently believes in such things must be embarrassing to him to be caught out like this, believing in the same idiocy as them. Doctors and scientists wear white coats since it keeps them from getting chemicals or bodily fluids on their clothes. White coats are rather popular with butchers too for that reason. There is no conspiracy.
We can see what else DP has been writing recently.
“I suppose other “serious” attributes could be a demanding moral code and a solid intellectual tradition, but these things can’t sustain faith in themselves: humans are very fragile, and the highest ideals and clearest arguments don’t keep anyone from sinning, burning out, or falling away.”
funny how an omnipotent god fails so constantly.
“The burning of Talmuds was a regrettable overreaction to a moral panic but the Crusades were, in contemporary jargon, a failed effort to liberate the indigenous Christian populations of the Eastern Mediterranean from Arab and Turkish colonialism.”
and more utter lies from DP when he chooses to misrepesent the Crusades. Bummer when Christians attacked Christians, and attacked everyone else too. We start with excuses about this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disputation_of_Paris and then we get DP forgetting about the Fourth Crusade, when Christian Constantinople was attacked by Christians https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sack_of_Constantinople . Catholics do like to forget that they burned Jews with their Talmuds.

Don’t doctors have to pass some sort of exam to be able to practice in a particular state? You’d think someone who proposes the exorcism of vaginas to cure endometriosis would probably fail a basic test.

they have to present their medical school information and other licenses they may have. then they are reviewed by a board of doctors, who are volunteers. At least that’s the way it is in PA. So, if they look good on paper, they probably will get in.

Could be a lot going on but as an educated person you’d think she’d cast these ridiculous notions aside. I know they are prevalent in some places in Africa (witches and demons) but she should be beyond that. I don’t think someone should be allowed to practice medicine with such harmful ideas because those ideas directly affect how she treats people. Be afraid to walk under a ladder and believe in ghosts but don’t try to explain medical conditions with these beliefs.

It’s a fascinating dynamic, isn’t it? I can see that historically group loyalty had its value in the evolutionary process/success of the tribe — but ever since we’ve understood the value of the scientific method, you’d think people would grasp science is more important than loyalty.

Oh yes it’s the ultimate irony. Tribalism was key to our survival and it was rewarded by evolution. However with in group loyalty came out group hostility and that same adaptation that gave us the advantage way back when can destroy us now.

35% of Americans believe the Idiot In Chief is doing a great job. With numbers like that, and conspiracy videos like the one you call out here, it just goes to prove that 1/3 of humanity has an IQ of less than 95 — all of which succumb to failure to critically think. It’s a numbers thing. It’s not their fault they’re stupid.

Certainly not their fault. I suppose the real problem is political systems that allow for 35% support to be enough to form a government. Then everyone else is held hostage.
