My Mazamet

Convalēscentia – Part I

For those of you wondering: All is well!

Mike is back to normal – or at least as normal as one can be after health scares of this type. He seems to be over it. I, on the other hand, still have some residual anxiety; not based on a rational fear because everything is medically fine, but my fear was so incredibly intense that throughout the process it felt as if my heart was about to implode. I still wake up twice a night with that feeling.

Maya has made exceptional progress in the past couple of weeks. She’s developed the confidence to go outside into the garden by herself. She’ll still run back to her corner if there’s a noise, but we’re starting to see signs she’s going to be able to conquer her distrust of everything that surrounds her. She’s also starting to walk around the house on her own, as long as I’m immobile while she’s doing it. She’s chosen Mike as her primary human. I can relate to that as I did the same.

Rudy had a pinched nerve which meant a week at dog prison. One we fashioned out of cardboard and a metal (oven) grill. His convalescence is ongoing.

Dog Prison

Work has been pretty excellent. I’ve more than made up for my neglect of it in the second half of last year. Religious sculptures have played a prominent role with a large Dolorosa going to live in America (NJ) and a Virgin del Carmen going to a church in Louisiana. Both very special, but the Dolorosa was a particularly impressive processional.

Also I’ve found a gorgeous Bakhnoug at auction in Barcelona. Excellent price.

Mazamet has been buzzing. The building across the street from number 42 has been sold and the new owners are doing some serious work on it. Great because it needed the attention. La Villa de Mazamet has also been sold. The new owners are a very international couple – haven’t met them yet but I’ve got a feeling they’re the ideal people to build on the success created by Mark & Peter. In my experience people who’ve lived in a few countries develop more of an eye and obviously more of an ability to adapt to whatever is thrown their (our) way.

Also regarding Mazamet, I’ve registered to vote. I hadn’t felt the need to vote in years but I’m a staunch supporter of our mayor Olivier Fabre. I’ve watched Mazamet be transformed since we bought number 42.

He’s managed to inject a vibrancy into the town that’s rare in the French countryside. All too often towns this size are emptying as people move to larger urban centres. Mazamet is quite the opposite. The number of businesses opening far outweighs closures and the overall impression of the town is sharper, safer, cleaner and better maintained each year that goes by.  This makes for truly exceptional quality of life. Also around here, we went to the Mazamet Hospitality School for lunch last Friday. Best duck I’ve had in years. It’s at the Chateau de Lapeyrouse and the menus are ridiculously cheap.

It’s great to hear that Mike is doing so well. It sounds like the whole family is off to a great start for 2020 notwithstanding Rudy’s ailments. Hopefully his recovery is quick as well.

Mike’s been left with an over 2 inch round scar on top of his head (where they cut him open), but that’s it. And yes, it’s an excellent start!

Amazing what a good mayor can do. We had one here when we moved, and he was spectacular.

Great news on Maya, was hoping for an update.

    What happened to Mike?

Is Geoffrey going to turn the house into a restaurant/B&B?

Maya is extraordinary. We joke that her reactions are more horse than dog – which I guess is normal for a dog that lived in the wild. She’ll now voluntarily approach us and what was total terror (all the time) is now turning into almost a game. She’s testing things, then she runs, but she’s starting that process of inspecting and discovering the world around her.
Mike had a little malignant tumour. All gone now thanks to the marvels of modern medicine.
And Geoffrey and Janice will just pick up where the boys left off, I believe they’re keeping all of the reservations already made under the boys for a seamless transition.

That is wonderful news about Mike, and Maya, but poor Rudi – though I’m impressed by his dog prison. Very inventive use of the oven shelf. xx

He hates his dog prison! Makes all sorts of terrible noises while he’s in there. Any minute we’re expecting him to put on a yellow vest and start picketing…

It’s a joy to hear the [eccentric and wide ranging] updates from you!! You appear to have taken all of the challenges in stride and to have come out of it stronger.

You have lived in several countries…that makes you very adaptable 😉

So, I guess you’ll be staying put. Should be early spring there… Do walk the grounds, camera in hand. Remember, we all live vicariously—in Mazamet—through your posts.

Definitely staying put! We’re even avoiding leaving number 42 at the moment as any sort of flu (corona or otherwise) is entirely unwelcome 🙂

Always great news to hear about Mike doing better.
Your dog prison is quite nice. I like it.
A good mayor and people with something between their ears is good for a town.

Good news regarding Mike and Maya. I’m sorry to hear that the anxiety over Mike lingers. Overall, I’m glad you’re still out and about.

    That dog jail is amazing.

I think anxiety is built into my brain function. Sort of like someone with a a spotlight on a watchtower going round and round identifying potential threats. And finding them.

Welcome back! It’s been nice seeing you on Twitter, but I’ve missed this blog. Please tell Mike that he’s not allowed to get sick again. 🙂

He’s been warned! In fact I told him: “If you get sick and die, I’m going to kill you!” 😀

Fantastic news! I’m so pleased, for all of of you, and the ‘Dog Prison’ is cracking me up no end, ingenious stuff, plus the work will be gounding you again, getting back to normal and all that. Give Maya a lick from Rosie.

I love the look of your dog prison!! 🙂 And I love the fact that Mazamet has had a mayor who has made the town improve – fingers crossed he’ll get re-elected. Our mayor may not be as lucky, and I am worried that some of the good he has done may be un-done by his successors. But then that’s democracy, non?

Hope you’ll feel better again very soon and that the anxiety will leave you!

I know you sometimes visit Mazamet so you’ve probably noticed the difference. When we bought the house at the end of 2014 the town felt like it was stuck in the past. Even the restaurants – you’d walk in and expect them to announce at any minute that Margaret Thatcher had just become PM 😀
Now the town feels like it’s part of civilisation. Everything from Les Halles to the Passarelle, Olivier Fabre was the driving force.
