The End is in Sight!
The fabric above is a 100% linen fabric called Water Iris, by Zoffany. Only £78 p/ metre. It’s what we’ve settled on for the dining room chairs. I’ve been working on matching the blue on a little pair of modern consoles to the spectacular blue in that wonderful little desk by Migeon. It took a bit of time, but I’m happy with the effect. I might still darken them just a touch more.
Apart from the floor which still needs polishing and finishing touches here and there, like the tassel fringe trim on the linen curtains and the chain on the chandelier will also be covered in linen – this is the closest to the final product we’ve ever been. I’m happy. Just in time because the in-laws are about to arrive. Mike’s brother just finished a successful run of Romeo and Juliet in York (the Independent seems to agree) and so he and his wife are coming to relax for a few days.

Splendidly done – love the mix of restraint and flourish – each where it counts. The water iris fabric is lovely too, and let’s face it, you only need to upholster the chairs once, and you won’t need a huge amount. It should wear well too, and even if it fades it will still be beautiful.

I spend 99.9% of the time criticising and questioning myself (especially because my expertise is more art history than design), but then once in a blue moon there’s a moment when I get it right, and that keeps me going 🙂
Did you see the price that desk sold for? 250 thousand GBP!!!

Wow! It is beautiful, though. I think the time you spend criticizing and questioning yourself makes you better, both technically and creatively. That’s been my experience, anyway.

Thanks! It’s nice and moody in there. The lighting is working well too 🙂 We’re having the chairs redone by a professional because I want *perfection*!

They’re nice, aren’t they? We bought them as Swedish (Gustavian), but I think they’re actually Dutch. The flat back plate and the Queen Anne type legs are much more Dutch in style.

It’s all coming together beautifully, Pinky. I know it must seem like a long time to you, but to us looking in from the outside, you seem to have transformed the house and garden almost over night.

If feels like a lifetime! I suppose because the last house was so polished, for so long, spending three years in a place with ladders and tins of paint everywhere gets old very fast 🙂

I can empathize with that. I grew up in a house that was never ever ‘finished’. Dad wanted to do it all himself, and he was such a perfectionist…:/

fabulous fabric! After doing those chairs of my husband’s, I’m all about getting exactly what is needed for upholstery, no matter how many years I have to wait. the fabric reminds me of what the inks I’ve been playing with do.

It’s the organic, freehand sort of watercolour effect that we loved. The rest of the room leans to formal, so this should relax the mood a little bit.
