My Mazamet

Life at № 42 by E.M. Coutinho

Let’s talk about good stuff. Mazamet, August 22nd, 2018

The wallpaper is up and I’m thrilled. The effect is even better in person than in the pictures. The room is alive. The dark table will anchor the whole thing, give it some gravitas. We haven’t made a final decision on the chair upholstery, but I’m leaning to leafage of some variety. I quite like the numbers 1 and 3 in this set:

Summer girls gave us a new coffee machine when they were here. It was a twilight zone moment because we had ordered a nearly identical one a few days before. What are the chances? When they gave it to us I didn’t know if it was the one we’d ordered which they’d gotten from the delivery man or … what? So I just sat there confused trying to make sense of what was happening. Anyway it was a fab gift and just the right size for where we wanted it to go – because it was in fact slightly smaller than the one we’d ordered, which would have been too big. Anyway we gave the too big one to Summer Girl #1. We’ll get something nice for Summer Girl #2 for Christmas or for next summer – as we’ll be celebrating our 10th Summerversary together. Btw, the Magimix Nespresso machine is waaayyyy better than the Krups Nespresso machine.

Also in summer news: Right now Bombay Sapphire is selling a set of bottle + glass which is gorgeous. Summer girls got us one while they were here. The glass is an ideal size as it takes 640 ml. of liquid. Yes, I measured. This avoids the bother of constantly re-filling.

Okay, so there may have been more than one bottle of Bombay coming through number 42 this month.

In any event, we now have a whole set of the blue stemmed glasses ready for next summer.

And here’s a fab video of the Fanfares of Mazamet. A carnival like affair. It’s not quite Rio de Janeiro, which also means you don’t get robbed, raped or stabbed – so it’s got its advantages.

I see that Bombay gin is good for something – awesome glasses . .. . 😉
    That is wallpaper ? WOW!!
(we have a wall painting which was done in the 60’s – we don’t dare paint over it as the house used to belong to a relative and there are still some relatives of hers left. . .)

The room was incredibly plain, so it needed something to bring it up to the interest level of the rest of the ground floor 🙂

I’m curious as to summer girls background. Old money, or clever creators?

Genteel British bourgeoisie. Both their parents were professors. Summer Girl #1 works in education (child safety), and Summer Girl #2 works at a hospice.

Ah, still telling anecdotes about old Longshanks, then.

We have a whole secret language. Very politically correct in public, but for what we say in private we’d probably be arrested 😀

The room is fantastic! I vote leaf print #1. Love the festival too—a chance for you to practice your parade wave. 😉

T%hat wallpaper looks superb, but you are right, you will need something to anchor the room, to pull it in a little.
I wish the wallpaper we found at the last house in France had been in better condition…we were able to keep only portions of it even with help from the DRAC. And, of course, the vulgarians who now have the house have disposed of it…
I shall be off to scour the outlets in San Jose for that Bombay Sapphire offer. 640 ml sounds just about right for early evening on the terrace…lounging with no need to get up for a refill.

We considered that, but in the end we decided to do something more traditional. One day the house will belong to someone else and they’ll probably appreciate the versatility of being able to place furniture anywhere in the room without that ruining the effect of the wallpaper 🙂

Wonderful wallpaper, you both have excellent ideas for decorating rooms, and always get them just right. The gin glasses made me laugh – well, there’s no point in buying a couple of bottles if you get free glasses. We’ve started drinking gin from similar shaped & size glasses, much more sensible than faffing around with small ones. Are you having a rest now the Summer Girls have gone home?

No rest! Mike made me get busy again as of last Monday. He knew that otherwise I’d just be sitting around being sad… so we’re finally doing up the hallways in building II. And we got another front door for it as the one we bought second hand wasn’t quite right 🙂

The wallpaper is superb as you knew it would be. I like pattern 1 in the material, and just to be awkward number 4. Thank you for the recommendation on the Magimix Nespresso as that’s the one I”m thinking of at the moment.

p.s. the wallpaper is stunning. You’re not tempted by a white dining table and chairs? The room look so light and airy and …/summery…as if it’s outside rather than inside. Just a thought. 🙂

The chairs are the white Gustavian ones that are in the pictures. The table choice has *not* been easy. At first I wanted an art-deco mirrored table, but finding a good one that’s the right size isn’t easy. What I like about the one we bought is the versatility. With no leaves it’s great for 4/6 people. And with just two leaves it can take 12 (or a very luxuriously spread out 8.) In a perfect world I think at this point I’d go for an early Georgian table – but I won’t rock the boat any more for now 🙂

Wallpaper looks fab!! And those Bombay sapphire glasses – 640 ml!! You’ll need an ice-ball mould like the ones they sell at Noilly Prat, if you don’t already have one!! 🙂

OMG, I hadn’t thought of ice balls!!!! I’m going to get some moulds right now 😀 In Spain I used to make Cava ice to put in Cava, which everyone loved in the heat – but ice balls are much more amusing for other drinks.

They are really fabulous in cocktails, especially in glasses such as your Bombay Sapphire glasses!!
