Yippee: a crucifixion, abortion, ducks and pretty things!!!
And it’s only Wednesday!
– In case you missed the exceedingly popular last issue of Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, there’s a fascinating article on the second case of crucifixion ever found. This time in Rome. Number 1 was in Palestine.
– Hurrah for Ireland!!! Abortions for everyone!!! The first round is on me 😀
– A few days ago there was appalling noise in the garden. Rudy confronting a large brown duck who decided it might be a good idea to have a stroll here… I had to turn the water hose on both of them to make them back down. Instead of just flying away the duck hid in the bushes for a good two hours.
And here are some pretty things I’ve been keeping but have decided I probably won’t be using here… plus I have to compensate for the substantial amount of money lost because of the console debacle.
A 19th century Bessarabian or Swedish handwoven kilim. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.
A Qing dynasty embroidered coverlet. The quality is just amazing
And finally a pair of Dutch marquetry chairs, first half of the 18th century. I’d be inclined to keep these, but alas. Also leaving is my giltwood ciel de lit (canopy for above a bed.) This has been the reason for an exhausting battle between Mike and me for the past (almost) 18 years. I wanted it in the bedroom and he thought it was just too much. I’ve given up and it’s left today to live in a rather magnificent listed house in Warwick.
Just imagine some lampas drapes coming out of there.

I did have cat/duck, cat/bunny and cat/chipmunk. We have a whole menagerie. And a ‘fraidy cat.

I love the kilim, but dread to think of the price! Did you check the bush where the duck had been in case it left you an egg? Poor Rudy, he makes a new friend and you squirt them both with cold water.

I’m not sure about the price yet, I’ll have to do more research. It’s always complicated when a precise origin can’t be pinpointed. I love it too, the colours are fantastic and there’s something sort of like a botanical print about it.
You should’ve seen Rudy and the duck… the duck flapping its wings in attack mode. It was my first duck incident of all time

I had a visit from Rabbit today who is clearly the one true God. You duck 🦆 worshippers are pathetic.

Ah, crucifixion, what a grand thing it must have been. That nail through the side of the ankle looks just peachy fun, does it not? We have such little physical evidence from crucifixions because, as I understand it, people were left to rot on the cross and be eaten by animals so their remains were disposed of that way. Kinda puts Christ’s crucifixion, if it happened at all, into perspective. It wasn’t special; no one paid any particular attention to it just because “god” was being killed, and, if it did happen to said guy, his body would have been left to rot on the cross like everyone else’s. It was a strong method for Rome to keep people in line. Interesting that more physical evidence was found. I’ll read more into that. I’m macabre that way. It’s my Catholic upbringing.

I’m with Mike on the big wood semi globe thing over the bed. I mean c’mon. No way. Honestly it reminds me of a Queen giving birth and there are heavy draperies from the semi globe thing that shields her from view of everybody in the room. I’m totally with Mike on this one, it’s to much. HA! I bet you will now hate me if you didn’t hate me before, but Mike is gonna LOVE me. 🙂
However, how can you possibly give up the Swedish rug? It’s FABULOUS! Don’t sell that, keep it. It would be so fabulous in a bathroom. Why would you want to give that one up?

When we first intended to move from Villa l’Africaine to Villa Trianon in Spain (2007) I bought a ton of things for Trianon and they’ve been in storage ever since because the financial crisis happened and then finally we ended up selling Trianon before l’Africaine. Now the plan is to only keep what we’re actually going to use

Did you hope you’d have it above your bed? I also agree with Mike about it. Let it go! As fast as you can. And spend the money on something sensible, like wine. Sorry, but all I thought when I saw it was ‘dust collector’.

Yes, with red and gold lampas drapery! But anyway, with the money we’re getting a new (big) bed for the middle south facing bedroom which at the moment has a 120cm bed.

Ducks are such interesting animals. We’ve had mallard pairs taking up temporary residence in our apartment courtyard. Once they realized adult humans posed no threat, they became quite tolerant of us; but, they still didn’t like small children around because the kids would charge right at them. Duck mating behavior, on the other hand, can be very brutal. In human relations, it would be considered rape.

There’s a Hispanic area in Chicago called Pilsen where this same thing goes on during Good Friday, at least it used to. People actually had nails driven into their hands and such while hanging on crosses. Can anyone say, “Mental health issues here, people!”

What a marvellous week! Drapes yes I am imagining. I adore the carpet. Crucifixion..unpleasant stuff. But then I find all religion a bit unpleasant apart from the architecture. Mind you that was mainly built off the backs of the persuaded! Enjoy rest of your week.
