Number 42: Upstairs Landing Update

The bedrooms side of the landing is now painted. Scaffolding will be needed for the stairs side. The Baudson Wisteria mirror (from the charity shop) has a new glass and is up and an early 19th century Spanish console table has been painted to match it. The cut glass colonial lanterns are Indian and create fantastic shadows on the walls (which is why we bought more of them.) I’m thinking of perhaps adding some porcelain botanical plates on giltwood brackets or some small paintings here and there to break the absolute symmetry a bit. The rug is Persian, from my usual German dealer who offers really exceptional prices. The animal engravings between the doors (Leopard & Greyhound) are 17th century, by Roelant Savery.

Yes, it was a bit cold and dure before. A few more pictures and it’ll look properly “lived in” πŸ™‚

Such a gracious space. Love the way the mirror gives you an extra ‘window’.

Shadows make the space much more interesting and moody. We actually learnt the trick from Moroccan lighting. They use pierced lanterns which create an amazing light:

Of course this is stunning …. I have come to expect that of you. Those lanterns cast the most magnificent pierced patterns and I am covetous of the mirror and etchings. I have been effecting a rather profound move over the past few weeks, hence I have not been blogging at all. I am looking forward to catching up with reading my favourites and to writing a little this week.

Understated elegance. Simply beautiful. Including (what looks like) the vacuum cleaner in the bottom picture.

I think it is the dΓ©contractΓ© manner in which it is leaning against the wall that gives the image a sense of je ne sais quoi.

        Tres in the moment.

This style is created in great part by Louis Le Vaux in the 17th century and then gets popularised amongst the aristocracy in the 18th century – but then in the 19th century Baron Haussmann (commissioned by Napoleon to modernise Paris and make it as we know it today) ran with the idea and used the stonework/iron/gilding/checkered floors concept in many of the bourgeois buildings in the city.

I do like those lanterns and the effects they cast…
Are there just those two radiators on the landing?

Yes, just two upstairs and a larger one downstairs. The last owners called the hall “le frigo” πŸ™‚ I say it’s good for us because in the winter we’re forced to do some exercise by running from one room to the next so we don’t freeze on the way.

I did wonder. Our landings were smaller and though each had two radiators and a whopper at the foot of the staircase it was no defence if the winter cold managed to get through to the house.

Stunning. The lights are incredibly effective. They pull the whole thing together (though I adore the mirror too)

I’ve always loved this sort of lighting. In India they call them Hundi lanterns. You can get plain glass large ones starting at around 150 GBP (on Amazon.) But the cut glass is what really makes the effect more special. The English Lamp Company does nice cut glass versions πŸ™‚

Thank you! How’s your search going? The other day someone mentioned there was a fab property for sale in Labastide Rouairoux (reminded me of your wishlist!), but I can’t remember who said it or who the agent was πŸ˜€

  16. Beautiful, just beautiful. Just curious, what type of brushes or rollers did you use to paint the console table? Out of everything you have done, may favorite is still your idea to guild those centers swirls of the railing. That still looks awesome.

Boy that huge mirror looks right sized in that space, it looks just perfect there.

Thanks πŸ™‚ For furniture I use white china bristle. It’s the smoothest finish you can get.

      • Thank you for this information. So you brush it on then. I will always remember WHITE China bristle. Thanks for the tip. You have guts painting furniture, I’ll give you that. I think you have to do it once to develop confidence, and since I have never done it (well rattan porch furniture, not the same league) it makes me so nervous.

Smoothness makes perfect, so don’t be afraid of painting and sanding, painting and sanding. If you get it wrong, you can keep going until you’re happy with the result πŸ˜‰

What sort of light bulbs do you use? I’ve gotten pretty fanatical about LEDs with the full color spectrum of daylight.

As I’m a completely normal person who doesn’t at all have a problem with authority… when they were about to prohibit incandescent bulbs in Spain I went out and bought boxes full. So I have enough for a very, very, long time πŸ˜€
