Fabulous news! Dame Gillian Lynne Theatre

‘Andrew Lloyd Webber has today announced that the New London Theatre is to be renamed in honour of the trailblazing choreographer Dame Gillian Lynne.

The Theatre will be formally recognised as the Gillian Lynne Theatre later this year and will be the first West End theatre to be named after a woman.  It will also be the first theatre in the UK to be named after a choreographer.’

Huge congratulations to Gilly, one of the great choreographers of modern times. She was responsible for Cats, Phantom, Beauty and the Beast and many other successful productions. She’s also one of the few people in the world who was ever capable of cajoling Mike into dancing.

Isn’t it insane how everyone knows the name of the men behind these big musicals, but not hers…? Absurd.

Yes. 😦 I can’t help wondering if they would remember the name of a male choreographer or I’m just being overly sensitive to the dismissal of women in the arts?

Then she deserves the honour for that alone.

I once tried to get a dance school named after me but since I can’t dance and no one knows who the hell I am, my attempt failed. This is long over due news, however. You’re right. It’s rather sad that people know the names of the men associated with those musicals but not hers. This will help change that.

She’s 92 this year, and her mind is clear as ever. Did you see a documentary called Fabulous Fashionistas about older women who were very stylish? She was one of the women featured in it.
