Mazamet Under the Snow
Last night was the coldest night in France this winter. And this morning we had our first proper snow of the season. This year I was prepared and all the plants that needed protecting were either covered or moved into the greenhouse. There were herbs already popping up, I hope they survive.

Mike is a firm believer in buying a property in winter. He says that if the house is nice in the cold, then the rest will be fine. The first time he saw this place was during a storm in December of 2014 🙂

Smashing! My brother in law was driving near Toulouse, yesterday and said the roads were pretty bad.
He also complained about the cold!

And we’re reasonably lucky down here. In the north there areas that are completely shut down by the snow.

Yes, he said so. But he was on the A20 yesterday on his way to Toulouse, hauling 20 Tons of steel, and part of it was closed because of protests. He was forced to take a couple of alternate routes, but as his GPS kept wanting to direct him back to the highway we helped him out with google maps down here in Jo’burg and found him an alternate route!

Beautiful. The herbs will be fine, btw. Some damage to the leaves perhaps, put those will regrow. In other words, like Shakespeare once said to his cook, Melvin Wisenstein, “‘day ain’t deed,. Melvin, ’til ‘da roots freeze. ‘Den daze deed! So doncha wurrie nun. ‘K?”

Have you ever tried growing purple basil? It’s much hardier than the usual varieties and tastes superb.

It survived outside when all the other basil died, and didn’t seem to need as much watering. I’m aiming to grow it again this year, just off to bed, but I’ll find a link to the same stuff for you tomorrow. x

Last year’s was Purple Basil – Summer Surprise, I’ll pop a link to the shop, at the bottom, they do deliver to Europe, but you may be able to get it cheaper elsewhere. Only grow it in pots, and pinch at it regularly for salad’s/pesto once it gets going. As a note; this isn’t the same as ‘Thai Purple Basil’, which is sold often as just Purple Basil. The Thai stuff is nice enough, but not ‘basilly’ enough for me.

I read about the snow, but I assumed you’d be too far south to get much of it. Then I looked at the photos and wondered why you’d taken them in black and white…duh.
Oddly enough, these photos are the loveliest you’ve ever posted about Mazamet. It’s as if the house and garden had stepped backward in time to an era of sepia photos taken by men with their heads hidden under ‘hoods’.

I think it looks fantastic. I love a light dusting which melts off quickly. Was in Mazamet last spring, as was my sister, and we’re still looking at Mazamet, Aiguefonde, St. Pons and Labastide-Rouiaroux. Hope to meet you soon if my trials get continued.

Did you visit Labastide Rouairoux? Before we moved here there was a house there we had fallen in love with. It’s a bit more isolated than Mazamet – that has its pro’s and con’s.

I find it far more likely you just floated gracefully over the snow by sheer force of will. “This photo WILL be perfect and I WILL NOT tolerate A SINGLE footprint marring my perfect snowy vista.” was definitely not something you would say at all.

The picture of the house looks lovely, I think because at the top of the pic you got the tree leaves in the pic. That added a lot to the pic.
I’m still waiting for when the shutters get painted. That is when I think it is going to really “pop.” I’d Love to see a little more color which painting the shutters will do if you paint them other than white. Call me tacky if you want, but I would so love to see some color painted onto the outside skin of the house. I looked at the pic, you have some decorative protrusions on the building, the bars over the windows for example and the corner of the building the cement blocks I’d just like to see some color instead of the monotone color that it is. I know you are doing that a little bit with the ivy you have planted that is growing on the exterior walls, that brings color. Now you may think this is a tacky idea but it doesn’t have to be if you selected the right colors. I’ll try and find a picture, if I find one I’ll post it.

and was thinking that it would look great cladding your house. It would completely depend on if it could be installed with a seamless look. The point is, you have a magnificent house, truly magnificent, but in my opinion the outside is just a little bland looking, a little oump-pa-pa, a little pop on the outside would take it to a whole other level. I know this is a years over years long project for you so I am patient until you get to the outside walls and shutters.

Here, the Number 1 on this website, the Benjamin Moore painted house, this is a really pretty color and would look nice on your big huge house. It’s like a celery color and ivory. It’s both soothing and warm at the same time.

What a shame. Looking closely at the exterior pictures of your home,you have architectural detail that kind of get lost in the monochrome exterior. Contrasting colors, not garish obviously, but subtle contrast would just make it pop.
