Sexism, Racism, Classism & Homophobia – Here I come!

Or there I went. Down the rabbit hole, just like Alice. This business of one’s past is dangerous stuff. Here I was, safely behind my exceedingly high French walls, but no, I just had to go looking for trouble.

First I landed on a blog here on WordPress by a Brazilian LGBT activist, and then another (particularly well written site) by Walter Silva. His top post (in Portuguese) is about a data bank that keeps track of homophobic and transphobic murders in Brazil. Depressing. From there I went looking to see what the current topics of debate are regarding LGBT people, and that was really, truly, appalling. Almost medieval. Discussions that were put to bed in most of the civilised world many years ago seem to still be raging in a country whose flag ironically says Order and Progress. Based on Auguste Comte’s positivist motto, “L’amour pour principe et l’ordre pour base; le progrès pour but.” Meaning Love as a principle, and order as the basis; progress as the goal.

Progress my foot. As I read through articles and forums, and comments – so many fantastically ignorant comments, what I saw was the world I grew up with. A world of pathological machismo and a hypermasculinity of nearly comical proportions. Not to mention the classism and racism. I know change can be slow, I struggle against my own prejudices on a daily basis, but come on. It’s 2017. Ireland voted to legalise gay marriage. The last American ambassador to Spain was an openly gay man living with his (fortunately for both of them, also) gay partner. The prime minister of Belgium is gay. And in Brazil they’re still dragging out debunked myths and the tropes of old. All the *Gays Are* that you could possibly imagine. All the but’s. But, you know, have you seen the Pride Parades? But, you know, they’re promiscuous. But, you know, they’re not normal.

The more I read, the more I wanted to scream. The more I wanted to throw something at someone. The more I felt I needed to do something, to say something. How can it possibly not yet be clear to the world that a person’s sexuality is not a causal factor in any other characteristic that person may possess. My sexual orientation does not affect how competent I am as a professional. It doesn’t affect my ability to be honest, kind or generous. It doesn’t determine how much or how little I’ll be able to contribute to my community. No.

Every single day there are heterosexual people who commit crimes. Rape, theft, child abuse and even murder. In fact, in Brazil this year, thus far, there have been +25,000 murders. How many of those do you think were committed by heterosexuals? How many of the corrupt Brazilian politicians (many of whom are profoundly religious, by the way) are heterosexual? Funny isn’t it, how the formula only works in one direction. Gays Are (fill in the blank). Heterosexuals, on the other hand, don’t have a single characteristic attributed to them based on sexual orientation.  Funny indeed.

Brace yourself, it’s potentially only going to get way, way, way worse. Traditional political parties are, of course, not exactly liked at the moment, and there is no new meat offering an alternative for next years elections. That leaves the gay hating, anti-science, young earth creationist evangelical fuckwit extraordinaire, Bolsonaro, as the “change agent” orangutans are probably going to vote for.

Pretty awful still here in the US of A as well. I was in a local bar the other night and had an off duty Chicago cop start a conversation with me, or try to anyway, about the hideous problems caused by gay people in America today. Disease, drugs, promiscuous sex, you know the drill. I told him my father and my favorite 5 Catholic priests were gay so I wasn’t really the person to be talking to about this. He shrugged and walked away. Later, after I was plenty drunk, I sent a drink over to him and winked at him. This nearly caused a scene, so I left. Like Moe of Three Stooges fame once said to Curly, ” Curly, the world is, and will always be, full of moronic, uneducated idjits. Sometimes the best we can to survive is to mock the living shit out of ’em. Now, let me poke you in the eyes and hit you over the head with this hammer so we can make children laugh, OK?”

Ugh. I do not like reading this sort of thing. It makes me so sad. SO, I’m going to tell you a story from yesterday. 🙂
We had a tour group (of 60) come through (we live in an historic spot) and the community volunteers hosted a luncheon. Seafood chowder, chicken soup, vegetable soup, all sorts of sandwiches, homemade biscuits, lovely rolls, half-hour pudding (which is a cake) with blueberry sauce and whipped cream, and/or carrot cake. All made by the people living in the village and served with lots of hospitality. Oh, and there was wine to purchase. You can’t imagine how many compliments we received and I got talking to two men (partners) from the neighbouring province. They were the nicest fellows and I chatted with them for about 10 minutes before the bus left for the next ‘hidden gem’. They were effusive with their praise — they thought it was the best luncheon they had ever had, and said, “It’s going to be all over Facebook immediately, you can be sure; our sister is with us and she’s already posting pictures!” There were several of us who figured they were just the greatest couple who visited (I wasn’t the only one who got into conversation with them) and when I read stories such as yours I just think that perhaps those people you reference in your post – ignoramuses of the first order – might never have met anyone like the couple from yesterday. How could anyone think that men like them would be anything but wonderful to have around??

It’s the perfect storm. For politicians in the 3rd world LGBT people are easy targets. Especially in a country like Brazil with low education levels and Evangelicalism running rampant. Consider just this little tidbit:
“Evangelicals use the entertainment industry to spread their message across Brazil. There are 128 Evangelical record labels, with a combined annual growth rate of 8 percent since 2007, much of it driven by the 600 radio stations dedicated exclusively to gospel programming. In 2010, this market had revenues of nearly $1 billion.”

Here in the U.S. our prisons are crammed with Christians! Christians commit crimes at a rate far in excess of avowed atheists, illegal immigrants, and other despised groups. And, yet, nobody seems to make the link between Christianity and criminality. Why is this? We seem to be able to link up people we have never met or interacted with with all kinds of societal ills. Is this a failure of imagination or just a triumph of ignorance and mean spiritedness?

      Here’s some info:
“… Brazil’s evangelical movement, whose main political strategy is to win the presidency. In Congress, the Evangelical Bloc has become increasingly powerful, with the majority of its members voting to impeach Dilma Rousseff last year dedicating their votes “to God” in the nationally televised proceedings. In 30 years, the percentage of Brazilians who identify as evangelical Christians went from 6.6% to 22.2%—the largest growth amongst different religious denominations. In a country where voting is mandatory, it’s easy to see how Bolsonaro’s base could grow. Support from key leaders in the evangelical community like Silas Malafaia (from Assemblies of God Church) and Edir Macedo (from Universal Church), have also solidified his candidacy.”

No, not most. Just a rowdy (really silly) 1/3.

Saw something yesterday, forgot to save it, but it was a quote from a German:

“American has awoken, like Germany once did, to realise that 1/3 of the population would kill another 1/3, while 1/3 watched.”

John, where are you getting the 1/3? In 2016, Gallop found that approximately 79% of Americans believe in god, 72% believe in angels, 71% believe in heaven, 64% believe in hell and 61% believe in the devil. Then there’s all the other non-religious superstitious beliefs.

Powerful quote. I was just reading an article published today stating that the Third Reich would have been highly improbable without a widespread penchant for supernatural thinking.

Everything’s depressing at the moment. Here in Australia the fwit I used to think was a man of integrity is under pressure from the right of his party to delay marriage equality for ever if possible. So…while everyone’s supposed to be tightening their belts blah blah, we’re going to waste 162M AUD on a postal ‘survey’ on marriage equality that is neither compulsory nor binding.
Meanwhile the rest of the world is voting for marriage equality while PM fwit picks his nose. 😦

That 162 M dollars could be spent so much better. As for the societal upheaval this stupid postal ‘poll’ is going to trigger…. 😦

hi John. I don’t know where ‘that’ man has gone. I know why though. He got his chance to take the top job and he grabbed it. Unfortunately, a lot of people in his own party dislike him. So he called an election, hoping to win by a landslide and therefore not have to kowtow to the Right [and others]. Instead of a landslide, his party barely scraped back into power. Now the Right rule him like a marionette and he’s been forced to betray virtually every damn thing he ever said he believed in – like climate change and marriage equality.
I’m not sure I’d have the courage to throw the power away for the sake of integrity, but I know for a fact that he doesn’t.
I, and god knows how many others, had great expectations, and even though I’ve never been a Liberal voter, I almost voted for him.
