“Home” of Friedrich Nietzsche – Palazzo Berlendis for Sale
Source: Home of Friedrich Nietzsche – Palazzo Berlendis for Sale
4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms
300 m2
2,500,000 EUR (2,181,703 GBP)
The advertisement is slightly misleading, this is actually an apartment in the Palazzo, not the whole thing.
I love Venice, but living there can be a tremendous hassle. Especially at the better addresses as tourists congregate outside to take pictures.
Venice, unfortunately, is little more than a tourist theme park now. Great apartment, though. I had no idea that he lived in Italy. Do you know why?

Those were the days when people did “seasons”. Genova in winter, Brittany in summer, Nice in the spring 😀

So, philosophy did pay… Once 😉

Interesting, most of the books on Nietzsche I have read lead me to believe his was a tortured person who could barely tolerate the light from a candle by which he saw to write (at least later in his life). He never seemed to have enough money, of course, being a philosopher. Did he have a rich patron to provide for him. Are the furnishings the same as in Nietzsche’s time? That seems pretty luxurious. (Or did Nietzsche stay there as a guess for a month and now it is sold as “Nietzsche’s Apartment” in the same tradition as “George Washington slept here.”

Various patrons, I believe. I’m guessing this is a George Washington slept here situation 😀

I visited Venice with my father a few times when I was a teenager…it was always on the way back from Trieste and always in the winter so I remember Venice as foggy, eerie and fascinating.
Father always went armed with plenty of spare torch batteries as he refused to pay to have the pictures lit up ….but he filled my ears with stories of The Council of Ten, the inquisitors and the Bocca de Leone.
Not, however, Nietsche…..

My memories of Venice are of winter as well. The most significant being the not entirely pleasant smells

Yes, the smells…and odd shapes in the waters…

Truly an awful smelling city when I stayed there, and by far the worst I encountered out of almost all the major cities I visited in Europe.

Could you ever imagine yourself living anywhere else? I’ve always thought of people who choose rural Hawaii as a unique breed 😉

No, I really cannot, though I do like to travel, and I do miss fabulous architecture. 😘
