So lush!! We now have green grass and most of our neighbours were mowing yesterday — for the first time this spring.

It’s definitely a hybrid tea rose, so in the same family. But it doesn’t get darker at the edge of the petals, so I’m not sure which one.

As for your potted strawberries, if they are the same variety, we used to called them in Transylvania “goat udders” because of their shape, and they are the sweetest I’ve ever tasted, and mind you, for the military part of my past I was stationed for a while in a region where about 30 % of crops were strawberries, so I knew them well, in and out 🙂

Yes, they’re onion flowers (aka Allium Purple Sensation.) And the strawberries are Toscana. Last year it had fruit from May to the end of December. Very sweet, but small 🙂

The strawberries I mentioned about, weren’t too big either, and you had to develop a rather keen eye in the strawberry fields to find them. They were sort of a prize for the connoisseur 😉
BTW, bought the other day some large “beef” tomatoes as I fancied a salad. From Holland mind you, had my doubts, but bought them…
I couldn’t believe, they didn’t even taste close to anything of tomatoes, so a garden and a good climate makes a huge difference…

I envy you those strawberries. I live in an apartment and don’t really have a garden anymore but my parents have the most delicious wild strawberries in their garden. Looking forward to stealing from them whenever I go visit.
At least there’s always plenty of raspberries and blueberries to be found along the streets around here. It’s the best part of summer. 🙂

I love those chairs. Can’t seem to find them in Chicago. Europe gets all of the good stuff and we get McDonalds.

Making a new garden is always a bit trial and error, isn’t it…especially when you inherit one and have to find what is there, what to keep and what to improve…

p.s. I just bought a blueberry. They’re meant to only grow to 1.5-2.0 m. Could work in a big tub or even planted out, maybe. Not sure about how frost resistant they are though.

How did your mini-greenhouse work out? I’m going to get one because I’ve been reading that in the 19th century a common technique to keep herbs going in winter was to *double* greenhouse. Either a greenhouse within a greenhouse or glass cloches.

It’s going really well, and when you unzip it, the air inside is appreciably warmer, and more humid. It also stood up to quite a fierce wind without any problems.
As an experiment, I popped a small orchid in next to the lettuce. If it flowers I’m buying another mini greenhouse!

Don’t you love the African lilies? We have them here in our yard, along with the blue iris you featured. Wish we could grow roses, but all that poison for our mold-inducing climate! Can’t do it. They grow them well at much higher elevations on the island though – and so lovely. 🙂
