A Series of Even More Unfortunate Events: The Appalling Airport
No sooner had the Baudelaire orphans handed their passports to the immigration officer than they looked up and realized it was actually Count Olaf in disguise! In a very, very bad disguise. In the blink of an eye he switched the children’s passports for Syrian ones and the Baudelaire’s were carted off to an immigration detention facility in Albany, NY. Count Olaf then went to the bathroom to surreptitiously (a word that is here used to mean sneakily) change into his other bad disguise. This time with a fat suit and blonde wig, made by the same kindly gentleman who had made the Mrs. Doubtfire and Madea costumes. As he got into the limousine he made faces and noises, noises and faces, and once again got into character for the role of a lifetime. The role that would finally allow him to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune: President of the United States, Donald Trump!

They enjoyed the movie, but never got into the books, unfortunately.
Children are fickle beasts. When I was one my dad would take me to the library once a week to stock up, I could never get enough. My boys, on the other hand, have books on tap, my sister works in an excellent book shop so they never want for any, and do you think I can wring the tiniest bit of reading passion out of them? Grrr…
Number 2 has given me a bit of hope recently, and is currently up to number three Harry Potter. I am crossing my fingers that I can transfer that interest into something else once he’s done.

Mike’s brother instituted a reading period every day. It worked very well for the girl, but I don’t think the boy never really took to it… If someone likes Harry Potter and you show them some of these NPH scenes from the new Netflix series they might get considerably more interested in Lemony- which I personally adore 😀

Tying boys down to a reading time is so hard. They were perfectly happy to sit down and be read to all the time, but not do it for themselves.
I even have a rule that once you go to bed (9pm at the latest) you sleep, no mucking around, unless you are reading, that you can do for as long as you like. They still choose not to. That said, number 2 has been in bed for the last half hour reading away, so YAY!
They would love this new series, I’ll have to show them the clip, but I expect it will only serve to inspire them to watch it, not read the books. Sigh.

NPH is a good Count Olaf. Jim Carrey was fine too, but I haven’t seen his film in a while. I hope there’s enough interest on Netflix to merit a second season. And probably a third, since they covered four books in the first and there are thirteen total. Besides, the Baudelaires haven’t even met the Quagmire triplets yet.
