16th century poetry and also some wonderful music.
Amor é um fogo que arde sem se ver,
é ferida que doi, e não se sente;
é um contentamento descontente,
é dor que desatina sem doer.
Love is a fire that burns unseen,
a wound that aches but isn’t felt,
a contentment that is always discontent,
a pain that rages painlessly.
É um não querer mais que bem querer;
é um andar solitário entre a gente;
é nunca contentar-se de contente;
é um cuidar que ganha em se perder
It is longing for nothing but more longing,
It is loneliness when surrounded by people,
It is never feeling content from contentment,
It is care that is gained in loss.
É querer estar preso por vontade;
é servir a quem vence, o vencedor;
é ter com quem nos mata, lealdade.
Being imprisoned of your own free will;
Counting your defeat a victory;
Staying loyal to your murderer.
Mas como causar pode seu favor
nos corações humanos amizade,
se tão contrário a si é o mesmo Amor?
But how can its favor cause
bonds in human hearts,
if love is itself so contrary to Love?
There are few things in this world more pleasing to the senses than a woman playing the cello.

What if the woman was Thatcher? 😀

Could never happen. Affinities stiches into the deepest recesses of Creation ensure unsavoury bodies (Thatcher, mosquitoes, Swiss cow bells) can never approach things of great beauty (Cello’s, a woman playing the cello, blue vein cheese)

Profundity, simply expressed — marvellous. Is that your translation from the Portuguese, Pink?

I didn’t like the translations I found so I made some alterations 😀

Then you’ll also like this:
“De tudo ao meu amor serei atento
Antes, e com tal zelo, e sempre, e tanto
Que mesmo em face do maior encanto
Dele se encante mais meu pensamento.
Quero vivê-lo em cada vão momento
E em seu louvor hei de espalhar meu canto
E rir meu riso e derramar meu pranto
Ao seu pesar ou seu contentamento
E assim, quando mais tarde me procure
Quem sabe a morte, angústia de quem vive
Quem sabe a solidão, fim de quem ama
Eu possa me dizer do amor (que tive):
Que não seja imortal, posto que é chama
Mas que seja infinito enquanto dure.”
