Ah, you knew him too, it seems. I think I met him and Andrew once in the early eighties in Soho, but can’t remember too much about it. I do know that this was his favourite song, and he wishes he’d written it. It’s the most perfectly crafted pop song since Cole Porter wrote, in my opinion – I think perhaps George’s too.

I know Amy Winehouse is credited with writing this song and I can’t find anything online to suggest otherwise, but…I keep thinking I know the melody from somewhere else. I was never an Amy Winehouse fan so can’t work out why the song would be so very familiar. Is there maybe a much earlier song that sounds similar??

I’m pretty sure she wrote it – it’s in her biopic. But apparently Prince sung it a lot too 😦

Hmm…maybe that’s why it’s so familiar. Thanks for the info. 🙂

Meeks, it may purely be Ronson’s string arrangements and production that are evoking other tunes and artists, both of which are clearly nodding to the fifties (Sinatra’s work with Riddle) and sixties soul. Ronson gets a writing credit due to his subsequent influence on Winehouse’s original melodic thematic and lyrics: Over futile odds, and laughed at by the Gods – worthy of Cole Porter. She was a great artist, and while some may disagree, I think in a league above George Michael altogether, which I suspect he himself recognised. That isn’t to diminish his oeuvre at all, as great pop artists come along only very rarely, of course.

@ Metan and Pinky…this year has been horrendous. So many of my favourite people gone, just like that. Roll on 2017, I’m so over this year. 😦

I wasn’t a huge George Michael fan, but last night when news broke that he passed, I found myself explaining the difference between him and Boy George to my parents & my sister’s in-laws (my brother in law played “Freedom” on his iPhone and explained that it’s an iconic George Michael song).

Just wanted to make the same comment. David Bowie, Prince, George Michael. Not to mention all the political crap.

I was just the right age for George Michael as a straight little white girl in Western Australia. Wept over ‘Careless Whisper’ and had a fluiro ‘Choose Life’ shirt. He was gorgeous and smart and MUCH too young! WTF? What happened?

    • A lot happened 🙂 We were just talking about it. He was super intense. One of those people who feels too much. Too much to handle, anyway.

I got that impression from some of the back interviews. Needed a couple of spliffs to even sit still and talk. This world is difficult for the thin skinned

Today at work I mentioned to a coworker that many people died in 2016 meaning all the deaths among the celebrities. And he said, “Yes. And it’s going to continue in 2017.” He’s right. People tend to die. It’s still sad to see people in their 50-s and 60-s go, especially celebrities associated with music and movies we loved when we were young. It makes me feel old, which is no big deal, but just a sad observation.

I’ve heard, leap years tend to be rich in all kinds of disastrous events. Just a superstition, perhaps. At least, something to blame all the shit on.

Indeed. Like you stated, all of these folks dying so young is the saddest part. I, too, feel very old these days.

So sad. I read that he was a very kind and generous man who gave a lot of money away randomly and secretly to ppl he met who needed it. He always asked that they not tell anyone. A very kind soul. Wish there were more like him.

This really was sad, coming on Christmas, too. Like many others, I had a major crush on him as a teen. I don’t like when people act as if a celebrity’s death affects them personally, so I try not to do that, but this one really does make me think back on that time of my life and miss this beautiful and talented man.
