Watched this on Netflix yesterday and it’s just wonderful. A real insight into the human mind. They don’t just explore dishonesty on a superficial level- they look at optimism bias, rationalization (in regards to cheating/stealing) and examine some very interesting high profile cases. If you don’t use Netflix the film is also available through their website.
Also worth looking at this week:
How Donald Trump Bankrupted His Atlantic City Casinos, but Still Earned Millions– from the NYT. It more or less outlines his entire business model and business history in a straightforward way that hasn’t been done before.
And this piece on the Orlando massacre from someone in the Arab Humanist Society. Terribly sad to see what religion can do to a whole region. This reinforces my hate speech argument. If you think someone deserves death, or if that’s put forward as being the case, it’s the foundation on which discrimination and violence will be built.

I found that video hilarious as well.
I’m getting tired of all the trumpists and right wing nuts using this event to talk about obama and immigration. A lot of outright homophobes have suddenly switched around and pretend to be for lgbt rights because they want to piss off muslims. I would be happy if I thought this would actually change their mind about lgbt rights, but I doubt it will.
I hate how some leftists refuses to talk about Islam, but I also hate how the right wing is incapable of talking about anything but Islam and immigration, as if they were all supporting lgbt rights until Islam came along and ruined it.
I wish to thank you for stepping in and commenting on that thread about the massacre on WEIT (whyevolutionistrue) by the way. You raised some good points. 🙂

I always try to thread carefully on that site. One can be quickly accused of being a regressive there.
That documentary about dishonesty is tempting me to get a netflix account. I love those type of documentaries. I’ve seen shows dealing with similar concepts like how we all follow the “leader” or how our concept of language changes with age. I find it fascinating.

I actually got banned from WEIT for that exchange 🙂 A little bit shocking considering how much the professor says he’s against censorship… But it’s not the first time I’ve seen it happen. Both he and Sam Harris use this odd singling out of Islam as a media ploy. They imply it’s a matter of religion and dismiss factors like indoctrination within authoritarian dictatorships/theocracies.

I’ve figured life’s too short to spend so much time constantly getting into arguments with people that are supposed to be on the side of rationality with me.

You’re 100% right. It’s a shame, though. A whole section of a movement that’s supposed to be about free thinking is being hijacked by people who see the world in the same sectarian (quasi-religious) terms as the ones they claim to criticize.

I’ve also grown somewhat tired of the focus on stupid college students on that site. Yes, the regressive left is idiotic, but college students don’t seem to be the real danger to me. The right wing is growing stronger both in Europe and USA and they are the ones threatening to ban gay marriage, deport ethnic and religious minorities, and ban abortion.
Stupid college students seem pretty inconsequential in comparison, in my view at least.
Many explain their focus on college students by saying that they expect better from liberals than conservatives.
But that’s the exact same reasoning that the regressive left and some feminists uses to excuse islamists and only focus on the western world.
They’re using the same arguments as the leftists they claim to detest.
Sometimes I feel like tearing my hair out (which is a good reason for me to stop involving myself in these discussions I suppose).
I’m also getting annoyed at the comment sections of Norwegian newspapers these days. Whether the article is about salmon or fashion, the comment section always contains the same discussion about immigration and muslims. The right wing commenters always whine about being censored by the left, even though all their 600 comments are there for everyone to see. Any moderates are usually kicked out quickly with everyone calling them pc-marxists-leftists.

So it’s you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG. You know I’ve been wondering for a few weeks about the recent views from Norway (wordpress sends us country statistics). Most readers here are from the UK, then Australia then the US & Canada (in that order). Then Norway started popping up consistently recently… I convinced myself it was my Norwegian ex (first serious boyfriend) who was spying on me 😀 LOL. That’s so funny. I was 99% sure he was checking to see how I was ageing, if I was still thin…
But back to the substance of the discussion, I agree in every regard. Including the university student angle. University is when we learn limits and we do that by testing limits. I tested limits by questioning everything I was told. Now some students do it with their safe-spaces or whatever; it’s not really the apocalypse to let them express their views as long as competing positions can be presented as well.

Just to prevent any misunderstanding. I have no issue with your one (or two?) post on the stupidity of safe spaces. But on Weit it seems that every second post is about college students and leftists (and posts about how leftists protect islam) now which is ridiculous.

I have a list of websites that I read every day, so that’s why I’m popping up on your statistics.
Ironically, just after I wrote the post on right wing people whining about censorship, I saw another funny example of it. It was a post from someone with pictures of booth girls at a tech convention.
He stated that he wanted to post the pictures to be politically incorrect, with comments on how it’s natural for men to look at nice women (I really wanted to nitpick and make a comment on how it’s also natural for hetero women and gay men to look at nice men, but I managed to resist).
Anyway, the comments below were all of guys complaining about feminists being offended at the pictures. Thing is, there wasn’t a single feminist in the thread.
I read all the comments, and there was no one complaining abot the pictures. Instead, almost everyone was complaining about imaginary feminists taking away their right to look at women.
They have their own little imaginary war going on.
It’s like little kids playing cowboy and indians.
Watched the movie by the way. It was great. I found the golf ball example funny, because it’s true that we find moving something with our hands to be more deliberate than moving something another way. I think the math test would probably have made me cheat, but not because of the money. I’m not that interested in money, but I would be too embarrassed to have to state my low score aloud to someone. If I could plot my score into a computer instead of saying it aloud, I would probably be honest in that test.

Having said that, Hillary is horrendous. She made terrible blunders as Secretary of State and has used her position to line her own pockets. She would be worse president than Obama.
