but of course you’ll not hear of this in the media. all you’ll hear of is his attach on a LGBT community. who knows, they might even try to paint him as a right wing extremist christian. -KIA

Just the opposite happened. The first news reports covered his religion. The fact the bar was for gays was only brought out later. And please don’t use the dead bodies of so many innocent people (50 so far) as your political bait at this tragic time. Nobody has tried to claim he was a rightwing Christian. Paranoia is not a Christian virtue.

Rather, with Mr Trump’s hate-mongering, the risk is that all Muslims will be alleged to be like him. After July 2005, Muslims felt very vulnerable in the London tube.

what does the 7/7/2005 bombings have to do with Trump? and why would you say specifically muslims would feel vulnerable, rather than all civilians? since all civilians were targeted then BY Muslim bombers? i’m confused

Not for the first time, KIA.
The tube bombings are relevant because hostility against Muslims as a group for the action of individuals happened in London then, and now a US presidential candidate of a major party has been inciting hatred against Muslims as a group again. Simple, really. One man has shot up a bar. This does not make all Muslims terrorists except in the febrile imagination of such as Trump’s stupider followers. The general hatred is against Muslims, more than against Christians, however extreme those Christians may be.

Another horrid story involving guns, religious extremism, and folks in the LGBT community being targeted by right-wing nut jobs. Well, like Trump said after the Paris shootings a few months back, “If everyone were armed with hand guns, things like this wouldn’t happen.” God bless America. God bless guns, and God bless freedom.

What is in your DNA that keeps you from telling it how it is:
Islamic extremism NOT religious extremism.
Such a generalization insults the non-bigoted intelligence.

Islam is a religion as Christianity is a religion. the violence is based on what the holy book claims that this god wants. thus Islamic extremism is religious extremism. Some Muslims interpret their religion as demanding such acts and some Christians do exactly the same thing.

When was the last time a young Baptist went into a night club and murdered 50+ homosexuals in cold blood.
Your generalization of religions is provincial in its raw ignorance.

nice to see you can’t refute what I have pointed out, SOM. Your holy book has your god commanding believers to kill homosexuals. Now, how long has that been going on, SOM? Several thousand years, right? People have been obeying this command until civilization advanced and came up with the idea that people shouldn’t be killed for who they have sex with. However, Christians still kill homosexuals and Christians still kill people for having skin a different color than theirs, and they attribute their actions to their religion. I got to see lots of Christians holding signs saying that homosexuals deserve to die at the Reason Rally. They don’t do the deed themselves anymore thanks to our happily secular laws that punish doing such things.
Your particular sect tortured and killed people for being homosexual, for being a different religion, etc and enshrined it as the Inquisition, pointing to the bible as the reason why they were doing it.
I do like to watch you try to attack another religion and try to lie about your own.

Club,
So what if Christianity had a bad past or the bible contains similar hate speech to the Qu’ran? Around the world there’s a violent, deadly attack every single day and it isn’t from Christians. The problem is with Islam.
What your saying is analogous to claiming Ted Bundy wasn’t so bad, because look at what the BTK killer did. Neither of their actions excuse the other.
And stop automatically assuming everyone who points out how bad Islam is, has to be Christian. I’m not.

pink,
this is what i was trying to preempt with the info on the terrorist being Muslim, not christian, and registered Democrat, not a Trump supported or a rightwing Republican.
this was most likely Religiously motivated, but i was trying preempt people’s tying it incorrectly to Trump or the GOP or 2nd amendment rights supporters.

of course, he the father wants to distance the responsibility from islam. son isn’t here to answer for himself. but i wonder where he could have gotten such a homophobic idea from in the first place? my guess is Islam. it;s still religiously motivated. what were the paris bombers motives in november? they probably just didn’t like rock music. that’s it, nothing to do with Islam at all, move along

Thanks for pointing this out. Your superiority and moral righteousness does not make null the fact that if everyone were armed, this type of thing would not happen. I’m AGREEING with Trump. Thanks again. I feel morally cleansed by your superior view of things. Geez, I just got a chill. Must be your superior nature doing that. Thanks again. Damn. Just got another chill. Simply AMAZING! Now, go out and arm yourself, and, if you’re already armed, go buy a bigger gun. You never know when someone will try to shoot you for your righteousness, your superior nature, and your ability to send chills to others with your powers of perfection.

And this is not true because there were THREE cops in there, WITH Guns and they couldn’t take him because he took hostages. There was an off duty cop working the door at the club.
The cops first have to protect their own personal safety, what good are they dead?

Tsk, SOM, taking your god’s name in vain, what a lovely Christian you are. It’s great to see you try to change the subject. You made the claim that Islam was ever so anti-gay in your desperation to attack another religion. However, anyone who has read the bible knows your religion is just as bad or worse. Why is it so important to you to try to make believe otherwise?

Indeed. Some Muslims are even more extreme than Scott Lively on the issue. But generally there is a huge difference between whining about being persecuted for not making wedding cakes, and killing people.
Here is my take on it. Lots of people were up in arms recently about “men in dresses” in women’s toilets and changing rooms. Some of them cited those cases where those assigned male at birth, some having in part transitioned, have assaulted women in toilets. Some collect such cases. Given that I do not want anyone to generalise from such cases to me- I have never assaulted a woman in a lavatory- I will not generalise from one shooter to a whole religion, leave alone all the peoples of the Book.
However, it is true that mainstream Islam, and large sections of Christianity, say horrible things about gay people which effectively incites hatred in weak-minded souls. Claiming we are objectively disordered, and our actions intrinsically disordered, fuels such hatred.

Actually, Jihad seems to be a handy hook rather than the root cause. Interviews with his parents and ex-wife [marriage lasted just 4 months] paint a picture of a man who was bi-polar and violent, amongst other things, rather than fanatically muslim. Even the propaganda arm of ISIS seems to be staying just short of claiming this one for themselves. Perhaps they too recognize a nutter when they see one.
Like the nutter in St Martin’s Place, Sydney, it looks as if Mateen wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. Why he chose the LGBT community for his victims will probably come to light in the months ahead. I suggest we mourn the deaths of these 50 innocent people and leave the hate to others.

Exactly Meeks, it’s complex. Just hours after I tried to make this very point here, Gary Younge in The Guardian said:
“The truth is it is, most likely, about lots of things. And the bolder the claim that it is about any one thing, the more vulnerable it will be to contradiction and qualification. While the act of killing so many so quickly is crude, the underlying factors are complex.”
