The Hilarious Story of the Palmarian Church

Origins:

“In March 1968, four Spanish schoolgirls (only known as Ana, Josefa, Rafaela and Ana María) stated they saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary by a little tree on a piece of farmland called La Alcaparrosa near Palmar de Troya. Many people came to witness the supposed apparitions, and a number of miracles similar to those alleged to have happened at Fátima, Garabandal and Međugorje were said to have occurred. The seers had many supporters, including priests. Several other people reported visions at the site, including Clemente Domínguez y Gómez, an insurance broker from Seville. He gradually became the “principal seer”

then

“In 1975, Domínguez formed a new religious order, the Order of Carmelites of the Holy Face, which claimed to be “faithful to the holy Pope Paul VI”. It claimed that Paul VI was detained in the Vatican by evil conspiring cardinals. The order was initially run by laymen, but supported sacramentally by priests from Spain, Portugal, and the United States.”

then comes the amusing bit

In today’s edition of El Pais, “Pope Gregory XVIII” admits the whole thing was a scam from the beginning. The admission comes after he abandoned his papacy to get married and live in a chalet in Sierra Nevada… The group received tens of millions in donations in the past 40 years- much of which came from crazy Catholics in America. Delicious.

The emphasis on fundraising, double standards, and need for control are very typical of cults, religious and otherwise.

      • A Catholic offshoot was formed in Southern Spain 4 decades ago- they eventually broke off declaring the official Pope illegitimate, and so they named their own pope.
Now their own pope has left the church, got married and revealed the visions and everything else were a fraud 😉

Aaaaah, thank you! I didn’t realise they’d setup their own pontiff. I do feel rather sorry for those who genuinely believed, or at least wanted to believe that badly. At least we atheists are never in any danger of being disappointed. 🙂

I once claimed to have seen the face of Christ on a pizza in order to get a girl I liked to marry me. She married someone else instead. I later discovered the face I saw was not Jesus, but Art Garfunkel with a beard. Go figure.

Mrs Robinson tried to seduce me once. I gave her a piece of the Art Garfunkel pizza and she chilled out.

  7. Reminds me of the Mormons and their faith. Do you know that Mormons believe if you have been a very very devout Mormon, when you die you get your own planet and when you family member die they all go to live with you on your planet.

I may not have this exactlty correct but the angle Moroni appear to Willam Smith and took him to some Golden Tablets that were hidden in s

ome eastern State. Mr Smith closed his eyes and he was able to translate these golden tablets with their unrecognized language into English. If you haven’t already you should go research a little on the Mormon religion.

I was raised in the Mormons. Joseph Smith got a vision of an angel who led him to find the golden book buried on a hill in New York. He translated with the help of two magic rocks, which I like to imagine being bound in eyeglass-frames, though they probably weren’t. The Church is now a mega-wealthy corporation experiencing major internal conflicts over how they should handle the existence of homosexuals. But yeah, it’s weird, their view of the afterlife is weird (yes, you can create your own planet and be the god of it), and there’s a lot (a lot) of money pouring in. In order to enjoy full membership benefits you have to give them at least ten percent of your income, and a lot of people give more than that.
