Why do (some) online plant sellers lie through their teeth?
I’ve been looking for Indigoletta rose to buy and grow on the garage. It’s a rose with a very fine, delicate colour (see above.) Looking online, again and again, I noticed many sellers are using this picture:
What is that? Ridiculous. That colour should be officially named Prostitute’s Panties Purple. The only time you’ll ever find an indigoletta rose in that colour is in photoshop. And what class of people would want neon purple in their gardens anyway? A dictator’s wife? Terribly misguided. The real thing is incomparably more attractive.
This seems to be a recurring issue. I find forum after forum of people complaining plants they bought don’t match the colours advertised.

As someone who worked in a commercial greenhouse for 18 years, I can tell you, buying plants without actually holding the actual specimen in your hand is a futile business. I’ve had sellers send me the wrong species of plant than the one I thought I was ordering many times. There seems to be this wide window of interpretation when it comes to plants, not just about color, but about what the actual plant is that you think you’re buying. I don’t know why this is, but it is. I used to drive 20 miles to a wholesaler to by stock just to be certain I saw what it was I was buying before I bought it. Once I developed a rapport with a particular salesperson, I felt more comfortable ordering online and/or over the phone, but it took awhile to get to this point. “A rose by any other name is”…..quite often up for debate.

Prodtitutes panties purple??? I love it. FYI, my mother (who is a dictator & not a dictator’s wife) has neon purple roses and her Hamptons neighbors all agree she has no class.

And when you have taken care to make sure that you are buying the right variety and the thing turns out to be a lemon which ruins your planting plan you feel like burying the supplier under its replacement…
Mark you, if the colour didn’t match that of the photograph of which you complain I suppose you could only be thankful.
I am now amusing myself by running in review the people I know who would love to have it in their gardens – better than U and non U…

Either online plants are a strange colour, or they are a lot smaller than you expect. I’ve given up buying them online, it’s more fun to visit nurseries & garden centres & choose ‘proper’ plants. The only problem with that method is I always spend far too much.

I love nurseries- except for Mike pacing behind me saying “we don’t really need that, do we?” Online I get whatever I want and it’s delivered while he’s at the building site 😀

That is some colour in the picture – don’t think I’d ever want to buy that!! But I have inherited a rose in my potager that is a very vivid shade of deep pink!! Almost prostitute’s panties pink!!

Which is why practically all of my shopping is on Amazon, for the verified purchase reviews. The interent has changed the balance of power back towards the buyer.
