A finished one bedroom apartment
The kid moves in tomorrow at noon, so as you can imagine we’ve been running around to get everything done in time. It looks quite decent.
Still need to set everything up tomorrow morning, including curtain poles, but I think we’ll make it in time. In case you’re wondering, that slot in the kitchen where I’ve put a piece of furniture is for a dishwasher, should he want one. I’ve included all the other basics.
In all I’m very pleased. It’s compact, but considering the building is over 100 years old and wasn’t in great condition- the result is excellent.

Do they have paypal? Tell them to set up a paypal account. Donations are 2 times more likely if people can do it quickly online.

Just sent them US$150 through paypal. It’s not much, but I have stick to a donation budget p/ group 🙂 Tell her she has to log into her account and click to accept the donation.

Yes, it’s easy. By now paypal has probably already sent her an email with instructions. If not she just needs to log-in, and on her statement she’ll see the donated amounts, then by each amount there’s an accept or reject button. The faster she accepts, the faster the money can be transferred to her bank account. In Europe it takes 48 hours after clicking the accept button.

Earlier this week another supporter (in Brazil) was urging her to open the PayPal. We sent her a few messages encouraging her, too. From what i gather, she doesn’t know tech too well, so it was her nephew who set it up. And yeah, I’m guessing they alert the recipient with an email.

Has she considered also doing a crowdfunding campaign? I did visit her page, she says they need money for kennels. Animal campaigns tend to do very well internationally, especially as I imagine the amount she needs isn’t huge (in a developed world sense.)

On a post there someone is proposing she open a crowdfunding campaign, but G (my wife) said Sandra wasn’t too into it as it takes so long to get the funds. This was the post explaining just how urgent their situation was/is. It is something she should look into, though, i agree. Run twice a year it could be a wonderful donation boon. My Port’ is too atrocious to speak directly to her in any coherent way, but if you want to send her an email with the suggestion, I’d say do it. I think you’ll bring tears to her eyes knowing someone in France is thinking about her. She was astounded when G told her about my post. She put a post up about it on her page.

From the photos it looks /very/ spacious for a one bedroom apartment and the kitchen is just beautiful. He’s one lucky lad. 🙂

It’s not too bad. The ceiling height is 2.8 metres, which is 40 cm more than the average modern build. It makes rooms that aren’t very big seem spacious.

Yes, my parents’ original house was Federation Edwardian so we had those wonderful high ceilings as well. Head height aside, I’ve seen one bedroom apartments here that are MUCH smaller so I think your young tenant is lucky. 🙂

He’s not feeling entirely lucky today as he’s wrecked his car and only had 3rd party insurance… But as his parents and Mike told him, the important thing is he’s alive and undamaged.

Ouch. Poor kid. Still, as the saying goes, cheap experience if you can walk away.
The Offspring did much the same in her first year of driving and it’s made her a much better, more /defensive/ driver. Often it’s the other driver being a complete d*ckhead so it pays to never take the road for granted.

This looks amazing. You should see the shithole I live in. But then again no, I don’t invite people over. I’ve lived there for six months and still haven’t unpacked my books or decorated anything because I’m in denial about it.

Looks fabulous. Lots I like. Like the flooring. Like the big sized tile in the Kitchen backsplash. Like the kitchen cabinets. Like how you went longer on the countertop by placing the rolling cart between the cabinets. Where is the refrigerator though?
Consider adding a kitchen rail under the upper cabinet to suspend kitchen utensils from. Ikea actually makes good ones at a good price. Looking at the shower, probably the height of the bar that holds the shower head is screwed in at a standard height, but for a tall person it would be nice to install those bars a bit higher, the shower head is height adjustable and a person can always lower it if it is to high. But if the shower head is to low for a tall person, then they are just stuck with it.
Nothing like having nice thermal airtight windows. It should look really nice once people move in and hang some pictures and add a few plants. I like the light neutral colors on the walls, maybe I lack imagination but my favorite color combination is still tan and white, I know not very adventurous, but I just feel good living in those colors.

We decided to leave the refrigerator placement up to the tenant. It can fit (perfectly) to the right of the kitchen units or parallel to them on the left.
A major concern was being able to keep these apartments affordable. So we had to make some concessions regarding aesthetics.
Tan and white (or ficelle in this case) are also one of my favourite combinations. It manages to combine warmth and sharpness like no other two colours 😉

So glad you left it up to the tenants to provide their own refrigerator and refrigerator placement. That is a really good decision IMHO. It’s better from a landlord perspective if you don’t provide the refrigerator. This way people will pick out what they want, big or small, it is theirs to keep clean, or not. Refrigerators are not that expensive now days, and it is just better if you are not responsible for the refrigerator. Plus you may pick out a refrigerator that they don’t like, this way they pick out whatever they want.
