The head spinning Spanish election results

Spanish politics are in chaos! Hurray! There was no absolute majority for any party. Forming a government won’t be easy for any of them. On the right are the PP and C’s (Ciudadanos), on the left is everyone else with most votes going to PSOE and Podemos. A coalition will be necessary for any party to govern.

The worse outcome would be a PP-PSOE coalition. That would mean the system remains as it is: a kleptocracy. And not just a kleptocracy but the aristocratic variety. Basically people get into power, then they become corrupt. Then they pull their family and friends into government compounding and amplifying the corruption. As they get to make the rules, no one ever goes to prison. Their fellow party members protect them. Not to mention the highly politicized justice system.

The corruption scandal map in Spain is an obscenity and includes both major parties:

corrup

It made me furious when I lived there, and still does when I remember the struggle. All sorts of taxes going up; property taxes (ibi) doubled from 2002 to 2012. Services however were reduced across the board.

The Podemos platform promised to attack corruption, now with 69 seats I hope they get the chance to actually do it.

Do you say the Spanish government is a kleptocracy? As in a bunch of kleptomaniacs who come into power and proceed to grab up everything they can?

Look just call up Spain and tell the politicians if they don’t behave, I will personally send Donald Trump over there as some sort of ambassador. That should scare them into doing the right thing, at least for five minutes.

You’ll find a similar kleptocracy in France. And where is the Front de Gauche? Arguing between its component parts while the Front National steams ahead…
