I remember some years ago a 14yo girl was walking by a nearby lake when a man twice her size attacked her from behind. Turned out she was an expert in one of the martial arts so completely took him out, keeping him subdued until other help arrived. My hero! 🙂
I’d be interested to know if men humiliated in this way ever commit the same crime again.

Bastard. Amazing willpower on her part. Although picking up on metan’s point it would be nice if more girls/women had martial arts skill or self-defence skills. Yeah, I know, fixing the symptom not the cause. It would be nicer if men didn’t rape women …

I’ve always thought that one of the factors that contributes to rape culture is women being mentally/emotionally conditioned to be docile and submissive. That is of course, nothing more than a construct.
I imagine that if potential rapists imagined a woman might bite off a chunk of their flesh, or stick their keys into a man’s eye, they’d think twice before trying to push someone into the bushes.
A good start would be a free-pass law regarding rape, meaning a woman is permitted to kill her attacker in self-defence. It doesn’t mean women would do that, but the concept of a law of that type permeating social consciousness would do a lot to change how people look at things. The first thing it would do would be to take the power factor away from the rapist. Instead of being the aggressor, he has to consider it may turn out that he’ll be the victim.

Absolutely. We are told men are stronger physically, plus all the other conditioning as you say. Then, there is all the conflicting advice regarding rape scenarios. Don’t fight, you’ll make it worse/get killed.
Reading the story, I was waiting for the counter-charge, expecting at least aggravated assault, if not GBH by the look of him when she’d finished. I was pleasingly surprised to see the judge praised her actions.
A free-pass law would be great. I’d vote for that. Too radical I suspect. But, why not? Although, by the same token, it could justify lawful gun carrying …

Textbook self defence. Fearing for your safety/life is what the legal argument for self-defence rests on.
I don’t think the law would actually incite women to kill, it would simply make men understand the gravity of the crime and consider if they really want to risk it.

I see women’s rights as the “parent” of all civil rights. None of the others can exist successfully without that one- after all it regards a whopping 51% of the population of our planet.
As for this case in particular, I posted it because it breaks with the traditional victimization scenario. Rape culture is fed by the idea that women are helpless little creatures who can’t and shouldn’t stand up for themselves. The same stereotype is applied to gay men and in both cases it’s rubbish. I once avoided a homophobic attack precisely because I made it very clear I wasn’t going to go down without a fight- I think we need more of that type of attitude 😉

A long time ago I lived in a place where people who frequented certain bars/clubs ended up being seriously beaten and put in hospital. The only reason I didn’t end up in an adjoining room in a white gown was that I was sort of a rebellious, rough and tumble person.
I’ll never forget my line on that fateful night (as I saw a bottle on the sidewalk, picked it up and broke it on the ground) : “The three of you can attack me, but I promise you that if you do, one of you is going to die tonight.”
They ran as if I were the devil himself. Perhaps I am 😉

We live in a tough world. Even tougher for those of us who are part of minorities. I think we have to make the conscious decision that we’re not going to allow ourselves to be victimized- and part of that means being prepared to fight back 😉

I am glad this is one woman who stood her ground. Keys can be a very dangerous weapon and she used it well. What really makes me more angry is the excuse that he was ‘drunk’. I would love to add a few more injuries to this bastard!

-I was drunk, my dear, that’s why I was in a bar flirting with someone, then got into a taxi with them, then hired a hotel room, then we had sex. It was the tequila’s fault, not mine!
But you’re right, this one certainly deserves a prize. “I was drunk, so stalking and rape suddenly seemed perfectly reasonable.”
