My Mazamet

Life at № 42 by E.M. Coutinho

In all, a good week.

dogsfriday

The backsplashes in the kitchen are finally fitted. So is the mirror in the master bathroom. And we’ve finally moved into the master bedroom even though it’s not quite done and dressed.

I went to the bank Friday to transfer the balance of the 2nd block of flats we’re buying to the notary. The transfer of the deeds is Wednesday, and that evening we’re going out to dinner to celebrate. I’m very excited about the project because apart from reforming two apartments, there’s one that we get to create from a completely blank atelier space. It’s going to have high ceilings and a nice sized garden. I’m still not sure of how to dispose the rooms, but we have around 90m2 to play with, which is a decent size (for European standards.)

I found a chandelier for the dining room that’s a perfect match for the one we have in the grey salon. Same maker, same period, same cut crystals- the only difference is the size. It’s slightly narrower, but taller. That’s ideal for going over a table.

I was slightly worried about the house turning into a hodgepodge. When houses like this were built whole series of items were commissioned for the whole place, so there was a degree of cohesion. As time goes by things get broken, inherited, given away- and sometimes the harmony is lost. That was the feeling we got when we arrived. A little fix here, a little improvisation there, and in the end the flow is broken. Finding whole sets of antiques is not something that happens everyday; but consistent lighting in the reception rooms is a good start.

My mood has been mostly good. I’m making a consistent effort to keep it that way. I naturally lean towards thinking negatively, and it’s emotionally exhausting. The dogs manage to spend the entire day thinking everything they encounter is wonderful. Smells are exciting, food is exciting, noises are exciting- I must become more dog-like.

They take a prominent role everywhere else! In the case of the picture, I’d just put down some magazines to look at by the chaise-longue, went to the kitchen to get tea and when I came back they’d taken over the chair. That’s they’re game at the moment. When they see I’m going to sit somewhere they run to take the place before me…

I want to reach out and give those little guys a big pat each. They looks so restful lying there.

Btw is that the parquetry floor you were stripping back just recently???? It looks wonderful against that lovely pale green.

In some pictures it looks green depending on the lighting, but that’s the grey salon. The floors in the dining room are the same, but I’m still scraping. I’m halfway done 🙂

Oh! Sorry. I recognized the pattern of the parquetry but didn’t realise you had it in other rooms of the house as well. I wonder why whoever-it-was covered up such beautiful flooring in the first place. Criminal.

I shall keep the photograph of the dogs well away from my lot…they have enough ideas as it is and, it being the rainy season, muddy ideas at that.
Lovely parquet…enough to encourage you to keep going on the scraping.

Yes, he’s a Brittany Spaniel. Very popular hunting breed in Spain. Problem is hunters treat them as disposable. When we found him he was skin and bones. First week he refused to come inside the house at all. He obviously got over that 🙂

All hunting dogs are disposable here 😦 Brecons, galgos, Podencos, bodegueros. Chain em up, starve up, and send them out to hunt. It’s absolutely evil.

You have beautiful dogs. Yes, be more dog like though I fear that would take away some of the best of you. They think only in the moment, the now. Your eye and care for the aesthetic is a needed commodity in this world. Yes, be like the dogs, but in measures that leave you enough to grace us all with your style and care and ‘design’ for it brightens my day to watch you do it.

To be more dog-like. That is a goal! Not completely dog-like. Enjoy the scents and smells. Be more in the Now. But I’d avoid inappropriate sniffing as a way to get to know someone.

The distribution of your features looks incredibly familiar. Familiar, familiar. Would you mind if I ask about your origins?
