So here’s a quick sketch of the garden, almost to scale (almost because the house is actually equidistant from the side walls, which means I drew the greenhouse too small.) We’re keeping all the existing trees, shrubs, bushes etc. There are a few plants (not drawn out or labelled) I didn’t know that I thought were decorative but yesterday Olivier (the gardener) told us they’re actually weeds that must be removed as soon as possible. He’ll do that next week.
Apart from what’s in the drawing, there will also be two beds on either side of the steps that face the garden. There’s very little to buy plantwise. All we’re introducing are the plants where there are numbers on the sketch. And we also haven’t decided what goes in the beds by the steps. I do know I want something tall and thin and then something midsized and evergreen around it (preferably flowering.) The gardener says there’s no risk from roots causing damage to the house because of the basement.
Later in the year, or maybe next year, I’ll do some proper drawings of the garden and start a proper book as well. I was also thinking of maybe getting someone to do botanical drawings of everything there is in the garden, and then distribute them through the bathrooms of the entire house. That could be amusing
I do hope you’re going to set up some sort of time-lapse record of this transformation.

Go ballistic. Set up a dolly track and fix a camera with motor to it. Can’t be that expensive, and the result would be priceless!

I love the idea of the botanical drawings. They’d be both a decorative feature and and element of historical record keeping. 🙂

Once I get to that point I’m going to try to get your friend Anne to take on the commission 😀

Oh my god, yes! But how strange that two people on opposite sides of the world could even contemplate a project like this? The world really has become smaller in the digital age.

Tiny! I hope she agrees. I can send her clear pictures of the actual flowers/plants from the garden 🙂

For dramatic foliage you could try pawlonia tomentosa….a beautiful tree, flowers coming before leaves, but if you pollard it (thus no flowers) you have whorls of huge leaves – might be suitable for your new borders as a background to the flowering stuff.
There are some nice choisyas about…evergreen, flowering and scented.
Personally i’d be tempted to put a Brugmansia or two in those borders…even if it means greenhousing them in tubs over winter…depends on your winter temperatures.

Perhaps the decorative plants that Olivier called weeds could, at least, be plucked, dried, and then matted and framed, to mix real flora with the drawing and pictures.

Are you going to put in any lighting for the yard & gardens?
I think if I was starting from scratch, I would want to lay in electric lines even if they didn’t yet connect up any lighting fixtures. Lighting, gee it is easy to spend a lot of money on lighting, which I know you are experienced in.
You may be different than I am, I like to always have a connection around my home, I assume you are going to have electric over in the new terrace. I was very pleasantly surprised how well this product works:

It works really really well.

Where have you been?

There have been health issues in the house. Husband had serious problem with kidney stones for about 3 months.
So I have been stressed, and when I get that way I withdraw from just about everything.
I think about all my friends here, even when I’m not blogging. You are so special, so open and live an interesting life. I miss you when I’m gone. I’m glad I’m back!

Life can be so overwhelming and harsh, sometimes. I’m glad you’re back, too, and hope your husband is doing better.
