The Great Australian Gay Cake Frosting Wars of 2015

cakewarsBrendan O’Neill said gay marriage represents a grave danger to society because of the cake frosting industry (the Katy Faust bobblehead doll bobbled enthusiastically as he said so.) According to him it starts with making people write two names on a cake, not any names, but names of people of the same gender- Who knows where it will end? T-shirts that say happy anniversary with the names of two women? Cards that say happy anniversary with stick-figures of two men? Utter destruction for the  AACFHG (Australian Association of Cake Frosters who Hate Gays.)

The AACFHG might even have to change the theme of their yearly competition. No more prizes for the prettiest cake with anti-gay-slurs!
fag

Jokes aside, what O’Neill said is so disgusting, it could only be uttered by a highly immoral individual. Every single day lgbt people around the globe are victims of aggression and violence for being who we are. In Uganda we’re persecuted. In Iran we’re punished with the death penalty. Even in the developed world the risk of violence is considerably higher than average, especially for the minorities within our minority (black, transgender etc.)- None of that concerns people like O’Neill or Katy Faust. The many insults of the Christian right aren’t offensive. Not when their crowd calls us aberrant. Not when they say we’re contra-naturam. Not even when they push lies equating us to child molesters. No, all that’s fine. But ask a cake-decorator to write the name of two men on a cake and the sky is falling.

All this reminded me of Panti Bliss’ speech. It’s a very sick and twisted mentality indeed that says homophobia isn’t an aggression, but pointing out the perpetrators of homophobia is an aggression.

I supposed we’re all, well some of us, used to the Katy Faust rhetoric. But to hear equally vitriolic virulent garbage coming out of Brendan O’Neill’s mouth, was breathstopping. Literally. I heard some of his words and could not believe them. I really couldn’t take a breath I was so stunned. I must move in sheltered circles.

Looking at his odd background, he’s one of these weird people that prove there really is no difference between extremes of the political spectrum. Alternatively, he could just be deluding himself that he has ever been remotely left of centre.

It’s all calculated. I think it was in the Guardian that I read that he’s the go-boy for Murdoch publications. He pretends to be a centrist/libertarian while actually pushing an extremist right wing agenda. That’s the trick. “Hey look, he’s not even an extremist right winger and he also hates gays and women’s rights!”

Ergo we should all become extremist right-wingers? No. Maybe not.

I’d rather live in a hut on a mountain than sell myself out that way. I think it must be a horrible existence to live like him or Faust. Always angry, always trying to deceive people- at some point they must lose sense of what’s real and what’s the ‘con’. Whole lives aimed at destruction.

Another poignant post. So, a huge issue with Katy, Brendan, and their lot is friggin’ CAKE TOPPINGS?! Really? That’s a HUGE international issue? Bakers the world over are SO oppressed by gay people ordering cakes with same sex names on them that they must launch hate campaigns against gay people? What idiots! I can’t believe these assholes.

Reblogged this on Fairy JerBear's Queer World News, Views & More From The City Different – Santa Fe, NM and commented:
The marriage equality debate in Australia has turned a bit strange with anti-equality advocates using cake bakers being asked to treat customers equally as evidence of some great threat to homophobes.

Brendan O’Neill likes to position himself on the “Libertarian Left”, but to me he just seems to delight in contrarianism.

He opposes anti-racist campaigns in soccer on the grounds that it is “posh people” trampling on the “passion” of working-class soccer supporters.

Gay marriage is being imposed by the “bourgeois” on the rest of society – weird, given the polls showing a majority of the population support it in the UK – or are we all bourgeois now?

He does manage to make a splash with politicians (see http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2013/02/14/brendan-oneill-equal-marriage-is-an-elitist-campaign-with-no-roots-in-the-public) but I think on this occasion they got the measure of him.

O’Neill is truly off the wall. I’m wondering what people think marriage is about. He talks about it being redefined by SSM to be about companionship. I’m clearly missing something here. My partner is my best mate, we’ve built a life together, it’s about laughing every day, cooking meals, washing up, hanging out the washing, paying bills and daily humdrum trivia like that. It’s about being able to live with someone day after day, year after year. And sometimes you have sex. But the overwhelming tie is one of closeness, of … being lifelong companions.

None of that is dependent on having children or being heterosexual. And nowhere in the marriage vows I took were children even mentioned. It was merely about staying together and looking after each other.

      I think O’Neill is a closet evangelist.

I don’t see what the big deal people are making about putting names on cakes. Even if one had a cake with Chuck and Linda on it, some men would be happy to eat Chuck, and some women would be happy to eat Linda.

If that’s O’Neill’s biggest worry in life, that a cake decorator may have to decorate a cake with two same-sex names, then he really has little to worry about. Perhaps someone would like to suggest he lives a week in the shoes of an LGBT person and see if he can’t find more to worry about then with the threat of violence about thanks to people like him and his new friend from the U.S.

The bakers are the real loosers in this whole debacle. Why can’t people just leave them alone!?!

I hear you. It’s akin to another holocaust what those poor bastards have to go through. The crime against bakers by gays wanting same-sex names on cakes is surely genocide to the baking craft. Shame. I love cup cakes.

I think Panti’s got it exactly right… and we can do better. This is a process, after all, and it’s one each and every one of us must go down if we hold the principle of equality and dignity of personhood as goals that can be achieved. Using this principle as the benchmark, we can determine how well or poorly we’re doing in practice and correct as we go along.

And before people assume I speak only of equality and dignity of personhood for only the LGBT community, let me assure you I do so for all kinds of socially acceptable inequalities. I try very hard to train myself to see and treat people not by the selected identities – gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and so on – but as a mirror image of me, namely and person that is equal to me in rights and freedoms and responsibilities that I expect and enjoy and carry, as well as someone of the same dignity I expect and enjoy and carry.

Now, I’ve gotten in trouble for doing this from those who really desire to be the identity they empower… insisting that I treat him or her as if he or she was the identity itself. But if I succumb to this earnest temptation then I find that I, too, am empowering the idea that the identity itself is what matters – and not the person who embodies it. I think I backslide if I give in to this out a misplaced sense of practical respect rather than hold firm to the principle that there is no us and them in; I follow Simone De Beauvoir’s very important ideal to see the Other as myself. And this is a natural fit to Saul’s moral approach of the dividing curtain and not knowing whether one assigns rights and freedoms to someone else or one’s self. equality and dignity are in principle the same application.

“..to see the Other as myself” Yes. I may not be a Christian, but I too try to follow the principle of loving my neighbour as myself. The instant we give in to seeing others as ‘Other’ we start down a slippery slope that ends with violence and death. Politicians have exploited this trait for millennia as they drum up enthusiasm for war. Sadly a war between nations is merely an extension of the war we allow between individuals. If we are ever to grow as a species, this has to stop.

    All,

The full Q&A program is now available at the link above and it’s well worth watching to see Ms. Faust spiel her deceitful dribble and get smashed by two of the other panelists. It is wonderful to see someone call out her lies and hate and call them what they are. Well worth watching. One begins to see that the woman is stupid and what drives her is some sort of hidden hate. It really would be useful to get the real story behind her two “mothers”–whether they really exist and, if so, what sort of falling out (it must have been huge) there was between her and the moms.

The best thing would be to get these “moms” talking about their disrespectful, traitorous “daughter.” I suspect their story would be much different from Mrs. Faust’s. Real Christians should be ashamed of this woman. Her and her husband’s church must be quite the racket.

Just found the above interesting report on Ms. Faust’s Q&A appearance (also a late-night interview with her). More devastating criticism of her nonsense arguments–in this case, that she has a “daddy” problem.

That’s one of the things that’s always puzzled me. Very little is mentioned about her father except he ran off with other women. Did she see much or anything of him? If not, it’s hardly anything to do with two responsible lesbian women, but rather an issue about his parenting desires. It could equally as well be scripted ‘My parents got divorced and they shouldn’t have done, so I’m going to campaign against same sex marriage’. Why not campaign against divorce?

Was she embarrassed her mother was living with another woman? I know I would have been as a child. And yet I know two women (now married) bringing up their four children together (from the previous marriages) and no one bats an eyelid because times are changing. What SSM will do is change societal beliefs, customs, practices so that homosexuality stops being marginalised and discriminated against. Exactly what Faust is trying to maintain,

It’s terribly difficult psychologically (and socially) for someone to admit a parent dislikes them. Sometimes people spend their whole lives in mutually destructive relationships just to hold onto the notion of parental love.
To me it looks like Faust wants to find an excuse, an explanation, something from the outside to pin the failure of her relationship onto. Fact of the matter is maybe her father just thought she was an ass and couldn’t wait to get away. The man was a free citizen in a free country, if he wanted to he would’ve found a way to spend time with her. And no matter how much she jumps up and down and points fingers at gay people nothing’s going to change that.
Keep in mind the woman turned into an Evangelical nut in her teens. Had I been her father, I’m not sure I would’ve wanted to spend time with someone like that either.

agree. It is impossible to discern the true dynamics of a relationship from outside, but the key point here is that it started off as a conventional, heterosexual marriage but, for whatever reason, it didn’t work.

That seems a very strange point from which to start to campaign against SSM.

      • I have listened to or watch a video of all her public speaking. I think it was on a radio show in Seattle where she said that her parents worked together to not affect Katy nor her sister concerning the divorce. The divorce decree allowed Katy and her sister unfettered, unlimited access to her father, she could go and stay with him whenever she wanted, as could her sister. If she wanted to she could have lived with her father instead of her mother. I’m digging back in my memory banks but I think I recall that she had a lot of bitterness towards her father when she was younger but has since gotten past that and is on very good terms with her father.

If you listen to what Katy says it is, “It wasn’t until I had children of my own that I questioned how I was raised” Actually if she was truthful she would write that it wasn’t until I married a Pastor that I had any issues with it. Katy Faust has a father and if she wanted more “father” time she could have had that at any time.

What I want to know is why doesn’t her sister step forward and corroborate Katy’s stories? Why doesn’t Bethanny Newmark Klein’s brother step forward and corroborate her stories? Why doesn’t Robert Oscar Lopez’s two sisters and a brother step forward and corroborate his stories? As far as I am concerned until these stories get some corroboration they hold no validity, after all that is how we determine truth isn’t it? Evidence. Corroboration.

People like this just make me so angry. How can people, who might otherwise be considered intelligent, come up with this garbage? I am beyond exhausted hearing the Christian Right claim persecution. Well, unless someone starts stringing Christians from trees or dragged behind trucks in Texas, I have to reserve the right to say they don’t know shit about persecution. I’d bet in the last 50 years not a single US Christian has been killed because of his/her beliefs. I know for a fact more than one LGBT person has been killed because of who they are (not what they believe they are). So until that changes, assholes like this should just shut the hell up already.
