Self-publishing, circular-referencing, creating associations with misleading names with themselves in multiple capacities- it seems no step is a step too far for these people to try to lend credibility to their anti-gay jihad.
The most shameless of their scams is the outrageously named International Children’s Rights Institute which they have the gall to describe as “a non-partisan, secular, educational and research center comprised of scholars and activists from varied nations and political ideologies.”- Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
The outfit was fabricated and is headed by Robert Oscar Lopez himself, the man the HRC calls an exporter of hate. He’s also known as the ex-gay who self-publishes steamy gay fiction. The executive board is composed of Lopez as president, Dawn Stefanowicz as treasurer and Brittany Newmark Klein as At-Large director. In case you haven’t been following the story, as exposed by Jeremy Hooper last year, Brittany Klein and Rivka Edelman are actually the same crazy woman masquerading under various names.
Oddly enough, once you get to the page for the Academic Council and the other for the Testimonial Council, her name has changed back to Rivka Edelman.
Katy Faust is also listed as both part of the Academic Council and Testimonial Council. For some reason the same individual’s bios vary from page to page. On one Faust is referred to as a blogger, mother and marriage advocate, on the other she’s “fighting child trafficking.” I’d love to know how exactly she’s fighting child trafficking, and if this is done in the suburbs of Seattle or if she collaborates with Interpol.
The whole operation is a sham. Its members are the same people who were part of the amicus brief operation in Obergfell v. Hodges in line with the NOM strategy made public in 2012.
From the Constitutional Law Review (Highlighted names are people who submitted briefs and are also part of ICRI):
51. Dawn Stefanowicz and Denise Shick– Amici are two adult children of same-sex couples who argue that same-sex parenting harms children because children are forced to witness the sexual or gender confusion of their parents and highlight their respective negative experiences of having a highly abusive homosexual father and highly abusive transgender father.
52. Heather Barwick and Katy Faust – Amici are two adult children of same-sex couples who argue that redefining marriage will violate children’s rights to know their biological parents and undermine the foundational building blocks for child development.
57. Robert Oscar Lopez and B.N. Klein (aka Rivka Edelman) – Amici are two professors who were raised by lesbian mothers and argue that same-sex marriage bans protect the children of gays (“COGs”) and women by preventing their estrangement them from their fathers and children, respectively.
Lopez was also involved in filing yet another amicus brief with Janna Darnelle Anderson in a Utah case that preceded the supreme court case.
Search as you may for anything the ICRI actually does for children and you’ll find nothing. What we do see is cross-referencing between it and Lopez’ other site which is called English Manif. The circular referencing is endless. Lopez promotes Faust, Faust promotes Darnelle Anderson and Edelman, and they comment together on Faust’s own Askthebigot website. The book they co-authored, Jephthah’s Daughters, is the one and only product available for sale in the ICRI book store.
It’s on the basis of this multi-layered sham that the lot of them are out there promoting themselves as experts on issues relating to gay marriage and gay parenting. And it’s on the basis of these questionable practices that Katy Faust is being given airtime in Australia. Someone at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Q&A program obviously didn’t do their homework.
Hating the fact she’s here more and more.
I’m hoping that Q&A are being deluged by informative emails from you!

“a non-partisan, secular, educational and research center comprised of scholars and activists from varied nations and political ideologies.”
Bullshit. They couldn’t be un-conservative if their life depended on it. I read Lopez’s crappy overhyped book and throughout he has made several attacks on marriage equality, even to the extent that it was a insult on the back of the book where he stated “This book isn’t about marriage ‘equality’.” (yes he wrote that, verbatim) then three chapters into the book, there is a 4-page essay on why he doesn’t support marriage equality. These people can come across very cheesy, and dishonest at time. Like they’re trying so hard to cover a ‘we’re so innocent’ veil on their religious-based motives, but its so fucking clear.
I’ve slept on this overnight and I now think you have every reason to be angry at Ms. Faust. If I were in your shoes, and have had the understanding of what she does, as you do, I equally would be pissed off, especially if she had used my friendship as a way of proving that she isn’t a bigot.
But on the other hand, I truly and honestly think that Ms. Faust (unlike the rest) would have a more rational and grounded opinion if she didn’t have to carry the deadweight of her own husband’s ideologies. As said, we’ve talked over the phone, and she’s acknowledged the logical fallacies in her arguments and how she doesn’t address that less than half of all gays (22%) have kids, and most of them are childfree and PREFER to be childfree, or how Domestic Partnerships still grant same-sex couples parenting rights. I offered the SCOTUS decision could be a sign that its time to switch focuses, to start a new image for herself, to start talking about children’s rights and not attacking gays. I even showed her how people are more OPEN to believe that children have a right to their genetic parents if you AREN’T coming from an angle of anti-marriage equality.
She said ‘You know, I could shift my political stance, and recreate my image, and support marriage equality but…” then she never finished and gave a clear explanation on why she couldn’t. But now I get it. Its the church, her husband, and these other COGs she’s forced to get along with, so she can talk about children’s rights… I think she’s being controlled, but is trying to mean well…
What scares me is that she’s now getting involved with a new COG, named Millie Fontana. I watched the girl’s speech on YouTube, and she was originally saying that she had NO issues with marriage equality. Just like me her only issue was that same-sex couples sometimes restrict access to the other biological parent. She was even ok with gay parenting so long as the children have access to their other bio parent, through situations like co-parenting. But now after getting involved with Katy, and the rest… She’s NOW saying that “she can’t support marriage equality right now because gays exploit children”. She won’t even get involved with people who want to help her, because she’s afraid of ruining her fragile image. She doesn’t understand how getting involved with hateful people like Lopez and B.N Klein, it WILL ruin her image… I just am really fearing for this chick right now.f
Thanks however, for not putting too much emphasis on her church, and just going after her political platform she’s set up for herself. Her church does have a part in this, but its mostly Katy’s political posy who should be getting the bigger pop on the hand. THEY’RE the ones forcing their inconsistent beliefs into public policy.

I’d like to be able to agree with you, but there’s something I find very concerning- and that’s the position of the lgbt youth who may be the children of members of her church.
Who protects those children whose parents are made to sign the pledge?
Grace Church Seattle is creating a situation that de-facto endangers children who don’t conform to their vision. They’re teaching lgbt children to hate themselves and they’re ensuring the parents of lgbt children look at their children as if they’re substandard human beings.

What does the pledge say about the children?

It doesn’t specify, but it does make clear you have to agree with the church’s position on homosexuality. People are required to condemn it, which means parents are required to condemn their own children.

I see your point and concerns, and they are valid reasons to be against this church, however, as a atheist who has been exposed to many congregations I would have to say that this treatment towards LGTB youth is not untypical. There are many ‘pray the gay away’ youth groups that many churches use. Its why I have denounced faith as a whole.
Her church I would have to admit is a good critique choice because it would show why she refuses to stop opposing gay marriage as a CR issue, even in the face of its numerous logical fallacies, but still, it shouldn’t be your main focus. It should be like a 411 on Katy’s motives.

‘Secular and non-partisan?’
Secular gets the boot straightaway. As for non-partisan, how to define that? Surely as soon as you have a view you are immediately partisan.
Someone needs to buy a dictionary. Or stop deluding themselves as to the meaning of words.

I’m sure they copy/pasted that from some respectable organization like Amnesty International.

This is almost a mirror of what the Creationists do. They “publish” their own “peer-reviewed” papers in their own journals. It’s hillarious 🙂

I wish posts like this surprised me. ICRI really is par for the course relating to what lies people will tell for Jesus. Cameron and Comfort’s movies relating to secret Bible histories, David Barton’s blatant fraud regarding historical documents, even Lee Strobel are all just a few of the many names of people who have been caught actively lying.
Hopefully the Australian people will hold their news services accountable for spreading deliberate falsehoods.

I’ve watched Q&A before, I think they had Dawkins and some religious person on the episode I saw. The audience was tough- I’m hoping some of the panelists will challenge her.

Thank YOU! And the woman supports Exodus International which was an organization that did conversion/reparative therapy on gays. Seriously: https://justmerveilleux.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/atbexodus.jpg

*slaps forehead* Didn’t think of Media Watch!
What about 774 ABC radio? Depending on how well (or badly) Q&A goes it might be a topic of talkback the next morning (it has been a regular item recently) and Jon Faine is quite vocal in his support of marriage equality.
