The shuttering for the terrace is done. Now the metal is going in. This afternoon the concrete gets poured. Also this afternoon, the countertops for the kitchen get installed.
It’s so nice to be getting a life back. Before this move I had no clue of how much I took for granted, and how important banal everyday things really are. Having a place where you keep the scissors, the right drawers where you keep the saucepans. A comfortable chair in the right spot where you can sit outside and not be in the sun. Another one near enough to the fire. A place to keep the tea and sweetener near the kettle, a place to put the kettle so it’s near the sink… Not having those things that make up our everyday lives is exhausting.
We started packing to leave Spain last November, and it’s only now that life is starting to resemble what it used to be. Six months is a very long time to live in improvisation, especially considering how fine tuned our lives were at Villa l’Africaine. I’d spent years perfecting everything. I could glide in and out of the kitchen and put things together so very quickly. It didn’t feel like work. For the past few months getting dressed (finding clothes) and even making tea became a hassle.
Anyway, having a fully functional kitchen happens today. I’ve also put together a functional dressing room. It’s not pretty, but it works, and making it pretty isn’t really a priority at the moment.
Are you sure you have enough shirts?

I don’t, actually 😛 It’s not that I have a lot of clothes, I just have enough so they all last a very long time. Plus I’ve been the exact same size since I was 16, some of those shirts are 20 years old.

Looks like you have a slight imbalance between the extent of your shirt collection and that of your shoe collection.

Still not unpacked 🙂

I’m surprised your clothes aren’t organised according to colour, having first being sorted depending on garment type, sleeve length….you get how my organised mind works. (it’s how my meagre collection of clothes are sorted – I try to convince myself it’s so I can find stuff if I lose my sight, but really I simply like sorting things into patterns).
You won’t know what to do this weekend once the kitchen is neat & tidy & completed 🙂

They usually ARE organized by type and colour 😀 That hanging was Mike’s work… Once we get more rails for the rest of the room and all the clothes are unpacked, then I’ll reorder it all properly

After 36 years of marriage, my husband has finally come round to my way of sorting his clothes…..mind you, it took him 35 years.

I don’t think I have a chance of that ever happening. Mike doesn’t see things in the way I do. You should how he places things around the house, or how he puts a cushion on a chair. He refuses to understand why the ashtray has to be in a particular spot on the coffee table, or why the cushions are arranged in a particular order. And worse of all are his table setting kills….

Be patient…it will take time but he may start to comprehend the importance of such matters. Imagine how ghastly it would be if you were both incredibly organised & ordered, yet each insisted on things being in different places….

Having spent months renovations my bathroom last year, I feel for you. I hope it’s done soon, it’s time you relaxed again.

The Daughter and I downsized a /lot/ when we built this house so I had to throw away all the clothes I hadn’t worn in decades. It’s quite a liberating feeling…
I totally agree with you about the kitchen though. I could not live without a decent kitchen. The Daughter keeps relocating things when she unpacks the dishwasher – grrrr – but mostly everything is exactly where it needs to be for maximum efficiency.
I’m dying to see how you organize things. Can you do a visual tour of the kitchen once you’re happy with it? Not just what the cupboards look like, but what’s inside as well? And yes, I know I’m a sticky beak. 😀
