Harsh, but – No more Dukes of Palma.
In tomorrow’s BOE, there will appear the news that the title of Duchess of Palma is revoked from the Infanta (Princess) Cristina of Spain. Felipe VI has very high standards. More so because despite his position he’s not a particular supporter of aristocracy.
Although I also don’t support aristocracy, I’m a personal supporter of HRH Felipe VI. And an even greater supporter of the ideas I know he espouses.

It was more her husband than her, but it seems she was complicit. It was basically tax fraud, with some aggravating factors. They claimed many of their personal expenses as business expenses. Maid, nanny, children’s birthday parties.
The husband is also accused of embezzling millions from his non-profit organization.

There are no more Dukes of Atholl. I have mixed feelings about this: I don’t think they were particularly useful, but there were Earls of Atholl before Scotland was united into one country in 900.

I assume you’ve lost a voice of reason for Scotland in the House of Lords.One without a political affiliation? Or maybe the seat was hone when they practically abolished the house,another long standing tradition that should have been left alone (in my view) as it used to nicely counterbalance the sillier propositions from Parliament and get them toned down.

Taxes got them, and they did not breed well enough, so when the title went to some x cousin x times removed in South Africa he did not want to use it.
A warrior chieftain ruling virtually independently over a large area of the highlands, close to lowland towns, is clearly outdated, but still…

BTW – wasn’t that one of those instant dukedoms created because, “I’ve got to en-noble this idiot who married my daughter.”? I suppose it reverts to the Crown, and Felipe can use it to en-noble whatever idiot marries HIS daughter.

Indeed. I’m sure you already know a whole lot of titles are of the instant variety 🙂 A meaningless historical tactic of hierarchical manipulation. In Spain at least women had rights, in France not even that. The only way a woman could use a title was by marrying the holder of one.
Have you ever read about the Vatican selling titles? It was all the rage in the 19th century.
