My Mazamet

Life at № 42 by E.M. Coutinho

Gentleman of the Camellias

2504e

That’s an array of camellia petals covering the ground in our new garden. Just extraordinary. Mazamet is known for Camellias, especially the variety known as the Japonica Mazamet of which we have quite a few in the garden. It looks like this:

And we also have the traditional varieties

I’ve been working on gathering information on the house as it was when it was built, and found this amusing description of it in an old book on stately homes in the region:

It’s funny how attitudes change with time. The author of the book says the space reserved for the hall is minimal. Does this look minimal?

hall2Oh, and we bought another house in the centre of town. They’ve accepted our offer and we signed a private contract, now we sign at the notary on Monday. It’s divided into three apartments, two 3 bedrooms and a one bedroom, each one with its own little garden.  All already rented. When/if I can make time for it later this year, I’m going to have it repainted in fresher/happier colours.

We’re also looking at little blocks of flats, nothing too big. I’m not posting pictures of them yet, as I learnt from the previous blog that keeping my mouth shut in regards to business is a very good idea- at least until deals are closed.

I’ve always had a soft spot for camellias so those pics made me smile. Oh and grats on the new purchase[s]! You and Mike have become The Landed Gentry! Sounds like a brilliant investment.

I’ve tried growing camellias, but they don’t like our soil, & the one I grew in a huge pot had a sulk & died, so I have to admire them in other gardens. Yours look in fantastic condition – over here I often see them with rain & wind damaged flowers. Good luck with your new property ventures – you both seem to be settling in very well indeed.

Camellias are the town flower, apparently they like a lot of water and a lot of sun, so the climate here is ideal.
We are settling in well, better than I thought 😉 Living in the middle of a town where I can walk to the bank, post office, grocery store or restaurant- is just fantastic. And living outside the bubble isn’t too bad either. This version of life is better for me, healthier even. The whole competitive shark pond atmosphere of where we lived before was mentally and emotionally very tough on me. I was turning into someone who I really didn’t want to be…

Not quite. Kitchen, bathrooms- all of that needs to be redone, which means months of work and noise are ahead.

I’ve always loved camellias. They die on me. When I fall into poverty will you do cheap rents for nice old women? I’ll join the queue for the one-bed one. Thanks 🙂

We’ve set a €350 p/month rent limit per apartment. The idea is to offer a comfortable, tasteful home to people who are usually bullied by the market into living in places that aren’t very comfortable or tasteful. We can’t do it for the whole world, but maybe 15 to 20 households.
I don’t have family planning clinics… so I have to find an alternative and do my bit 😉

Hope the signing goes smoothly today. Just reading the blurb from the old book and see there are bedrooms for the staff of the house, perhaps I could come and work for you?

LOL. The staff quarters are huge. There’s a living room of about 20m2 off of which there are five bedrooms of 15m2 each and they all have built in closets. The slightly shocking part is that to heat all that there was just one small radiator, whereas there are about two large radiators per room everywhere else in the house.

First of all apologies. Despite following you WordPress decided not to let me know when you posted anything. Now corrected.
The new place looks fantastic and the gardens are wonderful. Such a profusion of gorgeous camellias.
I’m glad you’re finding yourself a more relaxed person in the new place, some of the competitiveness no longer needed.
In hope the next batch of work won’t prove too disruptive but I know you’ll keep the end result in mind to help you through it.
Really glad to find you sounding so happy and settled already.
    Hugs
