Pictures of week one
Still no internet. We’re supposed to be connected this Friday. That means we’ve been internet free from December 9th to March 27th. Strange, but it wasn’t the end of the world. The house is just sublime. There’s handpainted (Zuber) period wallpaper in the study, parquet floors, encaustic tiles in the entrance hall, panelling, beautiful ironwork, hidden doorways, secret closets- it’s heaven. Years of work ahead, but heaven. This week Mike got me a kitchen. Top of the line, curved corner cabinets, black brushed Zimbabwean granite counter tops. And the garden is bursting with camellias and other flowers everywhere.
At the moment we’re studying what we can restore and what needs to be replaced. The whole move was terribly stressful, but I’d say my faith in mankind is higher than it’s ever been before, and that’s a great thing. I just can’t get over how kind and helpful people are to us everywhere we go.

Not as bad as I imagined. The facade faces South, and that makes a huge difference to warming the place up.

I am so envious, Pinky! The house looks sensational from the outside but the inside…it’s like something out of a period movie! A good movie. 🙂 Ceilings? I’d guess 12′ in most rooms, possibly 18′ in the ballroom if you have one?

Glad you guys are settling in. It sounds like you will have projects for years to come with updating and/or replacement of some things. I grew up in a Victorian house, and I remember the creaks and thumps and “settling” noises, the windows and doors that were no longer quite plumb. I wonder if you have squeaking floors and the like? Just living in a home with all that history behind it must feel a privilege.
